Town Tactics and Logic

I'll just put this here.

I think we need to have a discussion on how Logic is applied in the game to the town's advantage. Mafia has been consistently kicking town's ass in recent games, so I think this is appropriate, especially with some new players coming into the mix. Mafia really doesn't need a self help group as they are doing fine as it is (what a bunch of thieves and liars we've become), but town needs a full on intervention.

To reference the most recent C9 that dweeb moderated. There was logic used there, and drew pointed out that when if you see a failed hammer on Lynch or Lose day, then that person is 95% mafia. Also, the attempted trap logic I tried to use when Adalicia told me he knew Protus and I were mafia. In thinking he was mafia with Protus, I went for the "if you're sure, then let's vote off my alleged partner" trick. My own metagame errors early on assisted in turning Adalicia against me enough that he wouldn't listen, but had that not been the case, I think we would have had a Mafia dead due to the logic trap.

If other vets could jump in here and offer their sage advice, maybe some traps that occur for town to watch out for, and plays that generally stink of scum, I would appreciate it.

The last game involved noobs, so it's tough to expect them to be as awesome as I am. You also had an idiot get mod-killed as well.

I dunno. Your performance is quickly degrading to sub par.

On the bus. I'll look in on this later tonight. You said it yourself, though. Town needs to get back to using logic instead of emotion in their decision making. Also, quick decisions tend to generally fall in the mafia's favor statistically.

Can't do it on the last game alone. There were two folks as mafia, pulling a power play against 3 noobs... one of them got modkilled and quit the site.

I just used that game as a point of reference. The object is to pool our collective knowledge and discuss what we need to start doing better. Duh.

Dude really quit the site? Kinda feel badly about that, but he was super warned and had a free pass.

If you knew him you wouldn't feel bad.

Key ideas:

STOP!
Think about it.
Don't rush into anything.

I personally need to apologize for putting my own entertainment ahead of my teams' with the fake posting restriction. While I feel it was a net gain for town, maybe there was a greater gain to be had elsewhere. I have a question for KrisT, but as it's regarding an active gain, it needs to wait.

I also would encourage everyone to 'step back' from the metagame and taking every little thing and running to the moon with it.

That game will be a main focus of this thread upon completion. I agree with the first part of your post in total.

I'm just going to say this now, as I think it's super effective.

We need to run a few Dethy games for the sake of bringing the veterans back to logic, and showing some of the newer players how logic can win games. Dethy is one cop of each flavor:

Sane - Accurate Investigations
Insane - Opposite Investigations
Paranoid - Always Guilty
Naive - Always Innocent

And one mafia. Each night the cops investigate and share results the next day. Mafia has to fake it to blend in. Logic dictates who is who through process of elimination. The only FUD is usually at the end for LoL purposes if the mafia has completely mirrored one cop, and someone has to choose which one is telling the truth.

»Pub Games FAQ »What is a Dethy game?

drew and Archivis have to remind me if Informed Dethy is better, or the normal one. I say we do this after our discussion, which will take place after ekster's game concludes.

I'm a bit rusty. There are no lynches, just nights. Still, it is a game of strict logic. Bullshit doesn't really apply well. It's tough for mafia.

Informed Dethy. He knows the setup. Town doesn't receive results on dead men. (dead men tell no tales)

Sounds fascinating, but I don't think I'd want in. I'd like to see four people who know what they're doing demonstrate.

That'll be the plan. We'll do our discussion after the ekster game, and then I or someone else will do a sign up for informed dethy. Spectators welcome. Questions during game welcome. Kind of like a peanut gallery. Then we'll run some more so everyone can play. It's fun. I don't keep notes in normal games. Never have. But if you don't take notes in dethy, you lose.

Notes isn't the right word. More like a chart.

_____N1 N2 N3 N4
Kris
Arch
drew
Ant
Dez

Investigation results go in the blanks.

Then you chart whether or not someone is whatever type of cop, till you narrow it down to 2 that are the same, and try to pick the right one. Or mafia gets trapped in the logic and it's even easier.

So does this game has countless amount of nights and players just keep going till they're all ready, or is there a limit?

I think the mafia can still kill people so that's the limit
