 | The province that could be poorest in 10 years A study from l'Université de Montréal's business school HEC Montréal has concluded that the income gap is widening between Quebec and wealthier parts of Canada and that Quebec could be the poorest province in the country within a decade.
The research conducted by HEC's Centre for Productivity and Prosperity found that between 1978 and 2009 net average household income gains in all other provinces outstripped Quebec's gains.

GuspazGuspazPremium,MVM join:2001-11-05 Montreal, QC kudos:16 | reply to jaberi It has nothing to do with "unique culture". In comparisons to Alberta, well, we don't have the oil, and for the rest, I'd imagine the corrupt and ineffective government in Montreal (and to a lesser extent the province) has a large part to play with the rest. Montreal is one of if not the most corrupt governments in North America. Only in Montreal could the mayor survive a corruption scandal at election time because the voters genuinely believe that he was too dumb to know about it. -- Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org |

 | reply to Guspaz Face it. Until the early 70's Montreal was the business and cultural center of Canada. Then the FLQ started blowing up a few mailboxes and the province began passing draconian language laws and drove the "ethnics and money" straight the hell west on the 401 to Toronto. 40 years later, the rest is history. So yes, you pretty much can thank the distinct society for your financial woes today.
If Quebec were friendlier to English speaking corporations and allowed their people to send their kids to English schools, Montreal would still be the business capitol of Canada.

 | reply to Guspaz And Quebec can't cry they are "energy poor" either. James Bay is potentially worth as much if not more than the Alberta Tar Sands. And blame the provincial government for stopping natural gas extraction in the province as well. |

 | reply to samdyhill The biker gangs in Quebec don't go after civilians unless they are stupid enough to screw with their drug business or strip clubs |
|
 | reply to sandyhill said by sandyhill :that is native land not quebec land And the Quebec gov't has a sweetheart lease on it and sells the electrical output at a healthy, if mismanaged profit. |

But, I expect this to be reversed. |

| reply to Guspaz said by Guspaz:Montreal is one of if not the most corrupt governments in North America. Funny you should mention that. Not just Montreal but all of Quebec. I have a friend who is in the construction supply business. He was until he retired a short while ago the Canadian sales manager. He told me doing business in Quebec means one thing to him....BRIBES. He say you can't sell anything or any service in Quebec without having an open hand held out to you. He said it was the most corrupt province he had to deal with....by a LONG shot! No other province came close.

| reply to jaberi I'm shocked, shocked I tell you! This tells me that what we need is a new branch of gov't employees sucking on the taxpayers' teat to analyze the situation. -- ~ Project Hope ~ |
