Looking for alternate number to be forwarded to my cell

Hi all,

I am looking to get a number that will only be used to forward to my cell phone. I will use it for business as my "office number" as I find that most people don't like to see cell phone numbers as a main business number.

I have been looking at maybe getting a voip service and just forwarding to my cell?

What is the cheapest and most reliable?

Thanks.

I've used voip.ms and callcentric.

I currently use callcentric (CC). It is more expensive then a lot of VOIP poviders but that's all relative. NA rates are $0.0198/min Voip.ms will be cheaper at maybe $0.005/min ?

I used CC because they have an android callback app that works awesome for my needs. Allows unlimited incoming cell plans to make outgoing calls free of cell usage.

Voip.ms is probably less user friendly then CC but for what you need I don't think you'll get too lost. Also, both seem to have excellent support teams and both are widely used by Canadians.

In short, give voip.ms a try for cheap and good services. If you struggle or need a callback service like I use try CC.

You asked at the perfect time.
Just days ago FreePhoneLine (Now named FONGO) partnering with Dell Canada released an app for Android/Desktop/iPhone called Dell Voice.

It's free to sign up and you get a free Canadian telephone number based on your location. You can make free incoming and outgoing calls over wifi or 3g on your smartphone using this app. Even long distance in Canada.
A cool feature that also comes with it is a "call follow me" feature. You can set it up so all calls to your free Dell Voice # will be forwarded to your cell phone.
Check it out at »www.dellvoice.ca

Total cost: $0.00

I'd be careful about signing up a residential service for business use. If they find out, you could lose your number.

I suggest asking in »VOIP Tech Chat for a business provider that can be used for forwarding.

They can give you really good help over there, as a lot more people are familiar with the business plans over there.

That depends on usage. Most voip providers are very liberal on usage! If you are running like 5000 minutes a month or more you've been cautioned.

If you are just running a couple/few thousand, then no worries.

Very good advice, IMNSHO !

BTW, Dell sounds too much like Bell - might set off alarms in some folks' subliminal rejection cortexes.

I use CallCentric and CallWithUs for VoIP.

CWU is my low priced choice for outgoing only at a budget price, and it works very well for me.

voip.ms is crazy flexible, in that you can set up pretty much an entire PBX worth of functionality with no hardware on your end. You don't even need an internet connection.

voip.ms specifically allows you to use a per-minute DID for business use. They've labeled their DIDs as:

unlimited: Intended for residential use
per-minute: Residential or Commercial use

The ToS also say that unlimited is for residential use only, limited to 2 simultaneous channels and 3500 minutes. The per-minute one, though, has unlimited channels and can be used for business.

The rate to do the forwarding would be, for a typical DID, $0.01 per minute incoming (customer to DID), and $0.0052 per minute for the outgoing (DID to your cell), for a total of $0.0152 per minute. It's billed in 6 second increments. There would also be the typically $0.99 per month fee for the DID.

You can do a lot of other fancy things (menu systems, voicemail, rule-based stuff, ring multiple phones, etc). You could also have a toll-free number, although that costs more. The cost for doing a toll free number would be:

Canada/US toll free DID:
Monthly fee: $1.49
Per-minute fee for forwarding: $0.032 in + $0.0052 out = $0.0372 per minute

Yeah, toll free numbers aren't very expensive these days. Throw a fiver at it each month and you'd get almost a hundred minutes a month of forwarded toll free.

Thanks for all the replies. I called ms. voip, callcentric, and looked into dellvoice.

ms and callcentric both charged double for the call forwarding, one for the incoming call and then for the outgoing call.

I ended up using Iktel as I am already with them for internet and it's 9.00/ month for unlimited call forwarding.

Guspaz, I just read your post now (after I set it up with iktel), I do like the toll free number idea, it may be something I can add later on.

Thanks again everyone.

I think I will give the Dell voice a try on my cell and see how that works just for instances where I may be out of tow and have access to wifi.

Just as an FYI, $9 per month would be 527 minutes with voip.ms, so you should take that into your calculations for how much value unlimited has. If you're using more than that, unlimited could indeed be significantly cheaper. If you're using a lot less, it wouldn't be.
