Nope, tens of millions die each year; though it’s impossible to gauge the exact global death rate the number is probably closer to 160,000 per day, though it of course the actual number varies depending on a number of factors, and may spike or sink.

Japan is a high tech nation with few natural resources, a highly educated work force with an exceptionally low birth rate and a growing elderly population. Given that large areas of wealth have been stripped away, along with a sizable local population, also it has reduced their agricultural capacity, and the proposed change to end nuclear power converting over to coal or oil I would say there certainly is a global economic element at play.

Events like this have a profound impact which can be felt for generations well outside their own geographic areas. If you namesake is true you should be at least interested in the economic changes associated with these sorts of events.
