It is a little tricky for me in the last versions of ghostery. It appears very straight forward, but I haven't needed to create either whitelist or blacklist options or to disable the preset list of sites. |

ok, will half-ars help you out here an let you make the final decision yourself......you will learn that way.
1: "no scripts" = blocks potential bad scripts...no CPU useage
2. Hosts File = prevents info from going to websites etc by sending it to 127.0.0.1 (your own computer) no CPU useage
3: SpywareBlaster = prevents install of "some" malware,,,also places "some" websites into the Restricted Zone = no CPU useage

now ask yourself what do these programs do......do they duplicate each other's actions.......do they conflict with each other.........are they both using CPU........ Common Sense........you decide if you require both......you decide if by using both you will enhance your computer.

No, I do not use AdBlock Plus and Do Not Track Plus.....therefore can not rightously advise you on their value or no value..........however, do remember this.....just because others use a particular program does not mean that program is one the you absolutely require. |

 | reply to Romney2012 What is the advantage of DoNotTrackPlus over Ghostery and NoScript?
I do not see why I would want to use DoNotTrackPlus if I am already using Ghostery and NoScript. |

I do not see why I would want to use DoNotTrackPlus if I am already using Ghostery and NoScript. I don't use Ghostery or NoScript so I have no idea. So use what you want. |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to therube That's an interesting, useful chart. Thanks.
From that chart I can see that Ghostery (that I use) is probably the best choice for me. I do not want to use Social website buttons at all and I do not want to have cookies to opt me out of targeted advertising. To me, any program that does that does not have the vaguest idea what privacy is about so their entire program is highly questionable. On the other hand, perhaps, Do Not Track Plus uses some sort of GENERIC cookie that all its users use to opt out? That would be acceptable...a fake cookie like what Proxo can do.
I would like a program that has a better support forum. GetSatisfaction that Ghostery uses is just awful to work with. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | That's a superficial treatment of the browsers and cookies. He only shows Firefox's cookie options and show none of the others. He doesn't even discuss Fx cookie options! No sane user would leave Fx with "accept all third party cookies" box checked yet that is the default. Mozilla sold all users out a few years ago when they changed the default setting which until then had been NO THIRD party cookies accepted.
There is no discussion in that article about other browsers and cookies and no mention of the fact that Safari for Windows, at least, has ZERO cookie control available to users. That it is why I got rid of it. It is a horrible browser because it forces acceptance of all first party cookies and the other browsers don't do that. Safari does block third party cookies by default which is commendable but there is NO way to control first party cookies with Safari.
Chrome/Iron are bad too regarding cookies. Opera offers the most control and Fx and SM are ok once you get the past fact that Mozilla sold you out to accept third party cookies by default. You can change that setting but most folks won't and that means Mozilla is taking advantage of their ignorance. Otherwise, Mozilla browsers allow for excellent cookie control but they have to be properly configured and that article did not say one word about how to configure them.
GRC.com has excellent cookie discussion and testing of every browser. That CNet author has probably never heard of it. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |
