[connectivity] DSL Margin Randomly Drops

Normally my DSL connection has a margin of 14 dB, and everything runs well. But at random times the margin drops all the way down to 0 dB, and my DSL connection drops. If I power cycle the modem, the connection is back up to 14 dB.

Sometimes I get 10 or more drops per day. Other times it is stable, and I can go 2 days without a drop.

Does anyone know what would cause the margin to drop so suddenly?

Could be anything causing the noise to bomb out. By chance, what would your downstream and upstream attenuation values be, and is the modem on it's own dedicated circuit to the NID? Are you aware of any specific device or electrical appliance that comes on around the time of the DSL drops? Are you near an airport or some other place with busy radio traffic?

Here are my transceiver stats:
Fastpath
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 864
Margin (dB) 10.1 11.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 49.0 24.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 15.0 11.9

The margin is sometimes as high as 14, and other times dips down to 9, while still staying connected.

The NID has a splitter that splits out the DSL from the phone. The modem is then plugged directly into the DSL jack. I do hear a slight background hiss when I use the phone.

I live out in the country so there are no external noise sources that I can think of. There is no pattern to the drops, they happen at random times, and do not correlate with anything.

Whoa, sorry about the long reply.

The line does seem to be a little long. It does seem to be in good condition so it's hard to say without knowing what is going on in person what could be causing the sudden bomb in margin. I could try suggesting to ask for ADSL2+ if it's available to see if that will help with the line's stability, but other than that perhaps a move from FastPath to Interleaved if you're comfortable with the increased latency it offers for stability would help, too.
