| reply to AVD quote: ... However, many members of Congress who signed the bill dont see expanded drone use as a problem. They believe the growth of the drone industry will create more jobs for their constituents.
Constitutional and surveillance issues aside, I wonder how many of those very same Congresscritters will howl when the drones eventually start colliding with commercial and private aviation in growing numbers? US airspace bears no resemblence to the mountain wastes of the Hindu Kush or the vast badlands of Iraq. And if hackers could perhaps hack into a US military drone to cause it to fall into Iran, the mind boggles at the havoc that could be created by similar malicious activity once unmanned drones in large numbers are criss-crossing over the US daily. -- "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Will it start a new war? Or it's one of the goals - increase military budget under the obviously increasing threat? Is it a win-win for our war machine? -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |

 | reply to AVD Meanwhile, here are the Europeans:
The EU is Considering Using Drones to Police Farm Subsidies, Enforce Environmental Rules (Popsci)
quote: When European farmers turn their eyes skyward, they soon may have more than the weather to worry about. The more progressive aviation framework in Europe means that government monitors potentially have a new weapon in their arsenals--unmanned aerial drones--to enforce regulations, and theyre starting with agriculture. EU regulators are exploring potential aerial systems that can help them spot farm subsidy cheats and violators of Common Agricultural Policy rules.
The bureaucrats are scarier than law enforcement in some ways. |

 | reply to Blackbird Hackers could just as easily hack into the existing ATC and cause havoc so no problems here.

Drones have been in use along USA-Canada border for a number of years now. |

Which if you find unbiased coverage of the congressional decision, it is an order to the FAA to create rules for the operation of drones, to prevent what you're talking about. Right now we already have drones operating in airspace along both southern and northern borders without such rules.
This goes beyond just the military as many local and state law enforcement agencies can see the value of using drones as opposed to manned aircraft. A $36k drone helicopter running on electricity is cheaper to buy and operate then a $500k manned helicopter. Currently the rules prevent the use of drones within the US, LAPA is even targeting the ones used by RE photographers to get aerial shots of houses. |

..... Obviously you don't see the difference between plane, directly controlled by a human (assuming he doesn't want to die personally) and remotely controlled device (which, of course, doesn't care at all)...

I forget. well since drones are unmanned it would not really be any less of a moral issue than shooting ducks.. they are just big mechanical ducks.
Actually i am going to laugh if they try and use drones for fish&game observation and they promptly get shot down by shots from rifles or shotguns(if low enough). Afterall you could just claim there was a duck near it when you took the shot and figured since it was a drone its software would get it out of the line of fire. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |
