Traveling to Mexico - wondering about cells/roaming etc.

Hey, I have an unlocked N1 phone. I'm going to be bombing around cancun in a week or two.

Anyone have any suggestions for the best way to handle data connections there? I'd be happy to by some kind of prepaid SIM with data and stuff that into the phone...

I have no idea what's going on down there for phone service though.

Suggestions?

hmm...you obviously don't have any idea what's going on down there...however, i think phone service should be the least of your concerns if you are going to Mexico.

This is from a guy who has not once, but twice turned down a "business trip" for him and missus to Europe.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

Oh but employees like that get recognition as a true company man and get a watch as a parting gift after 30 years. Where do I sign up for that swag.

Oh I have a very goo idea what's going on down there.

30, 000+ people killed in the last year in The Cartel Wars, beaches littered with the shallow graves of tourists etc.

Learn to live a little FFS.

So about the phone?

What no watch...you mean after turning down an all expense paid and what could be the trip of a lifetime to Europe one's employer would let you go...for shame...but I guess with a couple days travel on a cruise boat off the shore of Florida some people are just too burned out travelling to take another trip.

If it's unlocked as you say it is, just get a sim card from Telcel Mexico and away you go.

You don't need to know the rates just know that they are insane. Given that there are two ways do it:

1) Be ignorant (or pretend to be) of the price, use a few GB of data and then whine to the media about your 5-digit bill

2) Realize that the rates are insane and don't use your phone there

Maybe there is middle ground I'm not sure.

Oh you say you have an unlocked phone I'm not sure about the options for getting a SIM and service there but that's the way to go

I don't know much about the whole "unlocked phone - get a new SIM" thing, but know that the rates your regular provider charges could get very expensive, very quickly. If your phone is absolutely necessary, then finding a SIM and a pay-as-you-go program sounds like the way to go. Mine would just be off as, if I'm on vacation, I'm not interested in being in contact with work or folks at home.

A quick search:

Bell: Info page Roaming partner: lusacell (and others) $1.99/min voice, $0.75/outgoing text, $0.025/KB data (which works out to $25/MB)
Telus: Info page Roaming partner: lusacell (and others), $3/min or $1.50/min voice, $0.60/SMS, $25/MB or $10/MB data (plan dependent, it seems)
Rogers: Info page Roaming partner: lusacell (and others), $3/min voice, $0.75/SMS, $0.03/KB (or $30/MB, minimum 20KB, and 20KB increments)

As discussed in the thread about Saskel wireless' big bill to customer in the Canadian Broadband forum, be careful with roaming data charges as they can add up very quickly.

Just the first few hits I found (yes, some are quite old). But hey, except for the last one the all likely knew their attackers. I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse...

You can also add a death by gunfire in an Ottawa suburb in November:

It's not necessarily where the violence takes place, it's who is involved and why that is often more important. This is the example I used recently when someone who lives in Barrhaven told me that Mexico was too dangerous to travel to -- no great surprise they didn't have an answer.

??

it wasn't for me and my wife...it was for the guys i work with...and sorry, but spending time with a few guys who want to stay out until 3am getting drunk (after a long day in training in the factory) in a small town in Germany is far different from a "trip to Germany for a vacation" with the wife.
