This is from a guy who has not once, but twice turned down a "business trip" for him and missus to Europe.

??

it wasn't for me and my wife...it was for the guys i work with...and sorry, but spending time with a few guys who want to stay out until 3am getting drunk (after a long day in training in the factory) in a small town in Germany is far different from a "trip to Germany for a vacation" with the wife.

Oh "The guys from work" yeah ok I got it.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

WARNING: DON'T TRAVEL TO THE USA AS CANADIANS ARE BEING SHOT AND KILLED THERE!!!

Story of random violence that has killed a Quebec senior in Florida

quote:
The Broward, Fla., sheriff's office says a 76-year-old Canadian man shot dead during a standoff at a Deerfield Beach, Fla., trailer park does not appear to have been known to the shooter, who went on to kill his nine-year-old son before taking his own life.
Sorry, I couldn't resist, given all the hysteria about the entire country of Mexico being dangerous to tourists.

When's the last time you went to Mexico?

Nothing has changed in a decade there,if anything it's worse than it was when I was last there.

And there were 3 murders and half a dozen shootings,in the span of a few weeks,in a popular tourist area, where I was.

There are so many safer spots in the World to travel to.........why would anyone with a half a brain visit that country?

I haven't visited Mexico yet, but if I were to go I wouldn't be going to the Pacific coast or near the US border, both of which seem to be the areas where the violence is the worst. I would consider visiting the Mayan Riviera, but would also play it safe and not be out at 2am in Cancun.

Kingston Jamaica is a very dangerous city, but tourists know this and stay away from there so the drug-related violence is mostly against/among locals and it doesn't get the exposure in the US media that Mexico does due to proximity and reality TV shows. I've visited Jamaica but stayed away from Kingston or being out in Montego Bay late at night, Cuba (where tourists are safer than we are here at home) and Barbados but stayed away from the Gap late at night. It's about minimizing risk -- I wouldn't visit the downtown east side of Vancouver if I visited that city (haven't been there in years) for exactly this reason.

....now, back to the topic of the thread:

OP: Have you decided what to do with your phone wants/needs while on vacation? Have a safe trip.

Just the first few hits I found (yes, some are quite old). But hey, except for the last one the all likely knew their attackers. I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse...

Don't go to Florida either:

Hey Kardinal,
thanks for the tips. Much of which I agree with. If you aren't doing stupid things you are probably safe. lol Like hell I'd got anywhere near east van! lol Even during the day time, although I have heard they mostly just lay about and stare at you in the day.

So bottom line, use your brains and WIN!

Oddly enough I changed my plans. Someone shit the bed on the hotel reservations so I gave them the FU. Going to Runaway Bay Jamaica now. I've heard lots about there being serious issues in Montego but like you said, you can get in trouble anywhere if you try hard enough.

I know even less about Jamaica's telecom. Mostly I want DATA. With that I can do VOIP or look stuff up etc. Again, unlocked N1...

Looks like I can use LIME or Digicell there on the N1.

You can use the existing links up thread to check the costs for Jamaica. MoBay isn't bad, but I wouldn't be there at 1am because I'm not stupid (or at least, I'd like to claim to be). During the day, it's pretty active.

On my flight down there two years ago, the guy sitting next to me switched the SIM in his phone to the one he uses in Jamaica, so it's easy to do for voice. I don't know what PAYG programs you might find, but most resorts have free WiFi in at least parts of the hotel. I've often seen people sitting in the lobby area with a smartphone or netbook and using Skype to talk to the family back home.

Good luck!
