Can you explain it? It's this mystical, magical thing where you have somehow lent the government your money, interest free to them and they begrudingly return it when you show them that they took too much in the first place
Though to be fair I use it as a kind of enforced savings plan, nice to know that you're getting some $ back to play with (or in my case pay bills with )

Sadly, I've now used up the last of my credits from when I was a student, so excepting an inheritance that went right into my RRSP in 2011, no more tax refunds for me -- Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org |

I haven't seen or heard of a refund in years. You've never donated to charity? It comes off what I owe. I always end up paying and it's in the thousand all the time.
Donate to a political party? Nope. Name one that deserves my money? Should I give them 2000$ so I don't have to pay 2,000$? |

 | You must either work a hell of a lot of overtime on a regular basis or you are self-employed and your business has been earning more and more every single year. I'd like to know what sort of business that is if that's the case |

The problems happen when I have to do tax transfers. I get a lot back from one side (fed) but end up owing a crap load to prov.
Different prov's take tax off different things. I have a pay check from one and live in another.
It's a headache every year and it even puts accountants in for a loop. |

 | The worst is when you get a healthy bonus one year (from stock options and performance) and the government automatically anticipates the same revenue the following year and they expect you to pay them in advance, before the end of the new fiscal year. Not to mention the interest being charged...
If they get to keep my money for a whole year, I should expect an interest, the same way they charge you interest if you owe them money. Alas, it is the government after all... |

| reply to donoreo I've gotten a small refund the last couple of years (around 100), and never had to send anything in... I just download studiotax for free and send it in over the interwebz.
I started RRSPs this year, so i'm hoping for a bigger refund this year |
|
 | reply to donoreo Each year in Feb, I put in the max RRSP ~20K$. That gets me a ~7K$ refund which is seed money for next year's RRSP lump sum. If you can discipline yourself not to blow your refund on a new 'toy' every year, you can start accumulating some serious coin. |
