[DVR] RNG200N - Power off while recording

Am I doing something wrong or is this "functioning as designed"?

When I power it off and there's something being recorded it yells at me I either need to cancel the power off command or cancel the recording in progress.

Seems a bit silly that the device can turn itself on for a scheduled recording, then back off, yet if I'm watching something and want to record it and walk away or if there's a background recording going on I have to leave the thing on. Doesn't that mean it's also buffering the live feed too? If so then it's doing that all night after I go to bed. Seems like a waste of power and HD activity.

It's functioning as designed, but I won't presume to explain the logic.

Just leave the box on and turn the TV off, that's what I do and I NEVER see that message.

It's probably a few cents a month difference on the electric bill for my peace of mind.

Both the Moto 3416 I have at home and the RNG200N I had in a rental condo would record scheduled programs even if the box was turned off. And according to my power meter, it draws the same wattage (about 29 watts for the Moto) whether on or off.

Basically, if it's off before the recording starts, it will turn on, do the recording, then turn off. I do whish there was an option for 'Turn off when recording finishes.'

Whenever it's recording, it's also buffering the other tuner, unless it's recording 2 programs.

The power difference between on and off is usually tiny, no more than a few watts. The only advantage to turning it off is that the drive just idles and you save some wear and tear on the head positioning.

So I am correct in its behavior.

The last line is what has me. The last unit I had (can't recall, I think it was a silver Cisco) shut off when you told it to regardless of what it was doing. Seems like a very simple code change but then again I don't do firmware.

If it were my company and you told me we could reduce the number of hours a drive clocks each week by a few to reduce wear I'd say go for it.

It just dawned on to me.
Maybe the reason the DVR wont power off might be due to it has to be powered on so the DVR can be set to record a show from iPhone/iPad/Driod app remotely?

You cannot turn off the DVR while it actively recording. There is no 'turn off when done' type of feature or option. You can always turn it off when it's not recording. It will turn on if needed to start a recording, then turns itself off when done. (I'm assuming the iGuide SA's work similarly to the Motorola's.)

The new S25 guide for SA/Cisco STBs is based on the old Motorola A25 guide and that is why it is missing some major features that the SARA guide has. Click the following link for nore information:
