Sprint just changed my contract.. Off the hook?

My original service agreement with Sprint was for $129.99 per month for lines 1 and 2, and $19.99 per month for line 3, with a 25% discount through my employer totaling $32.50. Today I received an e-bill from Sprint stating that I'm now being charged $110 per month for line 1, and $19.99 per month for lines 2 and 3 each, with a 25% discount through my employer totaling $27.50.

While $129.99 + $19.99 still equals the same $110 + $19.99 + $19.99 = $149.98 before taxes, that's an extra $5 per month now that Sprint is "enhancing my bill." Here's the silly conversation from Sprint:

quote:
Rosemary G.: Thank you for contacting Sprint. I am happy to help you. Please hold a moment while I access your account.
Rosemary G.: Let's move this chat and make it a window of its own. It will enable you to view other Web pages while we chat.

Simply click the white Yes button below now.
You: clicked
Rosemary G.: Thanks for moving the chat window.
Rosemary G.: I am happy to help you. Please give me a moment while I look into it.
You: ok
Rosemary G.: Thank you for waiting.
You: The plan used to be $129.99 per month for lines 1 and 2, and $19.99 for the third line. Now we are being charged $110 for line 1, plus $19.99 for lines 2 and 3 each
Rosemary G.: We've enhanced your bill as part of this change. You will begin seeing all your lines of service with their associated monthly recurring cost listed separately. This allows you to see the cost of each line.
Rosemary G.: Earlier it was $129.99 for two lines. Now it is showing as follow:
You: Enhanced? The bill went up $5.62 because of this "enhancement"
Rosemary G.: Beginning with your February bill, Sprint will no longer offer service discounts on the secondary line for your Everything Data Share 1500 plan. You will continue to receive discounts on your primary line.
Rosemary G.: This change allows Sprint to remain a value leader for individual and share plans. In fact, Sprint is the only national carrier to offer truly unlimited data plans for all phones with no overages, data caps or throttling while on the Sprint network.
You: Umm.. This means our service agreement has been changed from what it was originally.. Consequently it means I should no longer be on the hook for the contract.
Rosemary G.: I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.
Rosemary G.: We have a dedicated account services team which handles to all the discount program changes related queries. Please call at 888-211-4727 and a specialist is standing by to assist you.

Just think of all the work some accountant had to do to figure out how to generate an extra million or two a month...

"only offer discounts to the first line, briliant!"

Most likely the same one who thinks people will pay $51.20 per gig overage on their broadband plans.

Basically, this.

It's nice that you're the only truly unlimited carrier...and probably the only reason I'm staying with you. However, you changed the terms of my contract without consent (and not the +/- 1 dollar administrative wiggle either), and thus, contract broken.

Makes me think I need to look and see how our current agreement is going.

I'm shopping for carriers and deals before I make the call to Sprint. I've seen my bill go up roughly $20 in 2011 alone.

I made this same call about two weeks ago and I was told that the change had to be materially adverse. And since the cost of the plan was the same and your contract applies only to the base rate of the service and what they provide for that price, also does not apply to discounts because they can take the entire discount away at anytime. That being said they referred me to this site and heres what it says.

When You Don't Have To Pay An Early Termination Fee
You aren't responsible for paying an Early Termination Fee when terminating Services: (a) provided on a month-to-month basis; (b) provided on a subscription basis that do not include a Term Commitment; (c) consistent with our published trial period return policy; or (d) in response to a materially adverse change that we make to the Agreement as described directly below.
Our Right To Change The Agreement & Your Related Rights
We may change any part of the Agreement at any time, including, but not limited to, rates, charges, how we calculate charges, discounts, coverage, technologies used to provide services, or your terms of Service. We will provide you notice of material changes—and we may provide you notice of non-material changes—in a manner consistent with this Agreement (see "Providing Notice To Each Other Under The Agreement" section). If a change we make to the Agreement is material and has a material adverse effect on Services under your Term Commitment, you may terminate each line of Service materially affected without incurring an Early Termination Fee only if you: (a) call us within 30 days after the effective date of the change; and (b) specifically advise us that you wish to cancel Services because of a material change to the Agreement that we have made. If you do not cancel Service within 30 days of the change, an Early Termination Fee will apply if you terminate Services before the end of any applicable Term Commitment.

What is or is not eligible for a employee discount is not part of your contract.

Hey JimThePCGuy; Really? Try and get an employer discount without signing a new 2 year agreement. Will not happen. Sprint ties us to a 2 year contract to get the discount, if they remove or change the discount we signed the 2 year agreement based on, they must remove the contract.

That is not how the contracts and plans are based on. What if you quit or got fired from your employer and lost eligibility to your discount? That is out of sprints control and independent of them. What if your employer severed ties with sprint? That is also out of their control. You signed the 2 year discount on the plan price.

Call Spring and complain until you get off the hook.

This is how I got off the hook too.

Hehehe..

quote:
Find an alternative. Having ammunition as to what contract you are going to switch to will give you confidence and strength to go through with the painful process of getting out of your contract.
2
Be a squeaky wheel. Say you want out because the service isn't up to par. (And really, is it?) Then back that up by filing official complaints online with the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau. However, if you have no grounds for complaint, then these steps will not help you.
3
Get a lemon. Get a known problematic phone, complain 3 times, be let out of a contract due to your local lemon law. However, most carriers and manufacturers warranty their phones for one year and will offer alternatives if you continue to have problems.
4
Try a market-based fix. Some companies such as CellPlanDepot.comand ContractExchange.com.au match unhappy mobile customers with people who'd like to sign up, at a discount of course. Some of these sites are free and others charge a nominal fee.
5
Look for your provider to bury changes to Terms of Service with your bill. Quite often providers modify their service plans, much of the time the modification is a benefit. It doesn't matter, this voids the previous contract. Read the small print on those inserts included with your bill, it will spell out that you have 30 days (may vary on where you live) to cancel your contract with no charge simply because they changed the contract.

Get off the grid. If you move and cannot get the same level of service as your previous location, tell your service provider. They're not legally required to cut you loose, but frustrated consumers have reported success. T-Mobile's and AT&T's is to waive the Early Termination Fee if you do not have service in your area. This step may have to be verified with their engineers.
Join the army. If you are a member of the US Armed Services and you receive orders to somewhere the company doesn't provide service they are obligated to cancel your contract free of charge. Keep in mind, you'll have to provide a copy of your official orders. Your base legal office should be able to provide you with free assistance in working with the company. Most carriers will offer a military suspension option as well.

I called them the end of last month and has them mark my contacts as fulfilled due to the change. I've canceled one line and will be moving the
other 4 to Verizon in the next few weeks. I'm tired of the nickel and diming.
Please note they put this in your January bill.

I am a month to month customer with Sprint and have been for a good while because my home is in a fringe area and the only way it works is for me to pay for broadband at my home and they gave me 2 airaves and then a couple years later upgraded them to airvanas. but because of me paying for my broadband they used managers discretion and let me out of my contract and put me month to month. and some how i still get upgrade pricing on phones.

That is not how the contracts and plans are based on.

Yes it is (with Sprint, not VZW or AT&T). My wife just signed up for her ~25% discount through IBM's corporate program and it extended her contract two years. Fortunately, she had only joined Sprint 2 weeks prior.

Because me paying to for broadband to compensate for there lack of coverage is why i'm not on contract, check out your agreement if they have no service they have to let you out of your contract. But i like there service outside of my home so i wanted to stay month to month.

All the agreements I have read do not guarantee coverage indoors anyways..home or elsewhere.

Also, do you expect Netflix to compensate users somehow because they use their broadband connection to deliver movies they are paying for through their subscription?

Lots of services piggy back users broadband connections now-a-days. I dont know why some people take issue with the carriers Femotocells only. My connection is sitting there either idle or running at less than full capacity most of the time. No reason not to send more data down the pipe to enhance the value I am getting from it.

So you are the type who lays down every time a provider expects you to come out of pocket to enhance or other wise make there product work better than advertised and expect not to get compensated? well i don't and it works for me. I shake my head every time someone comes into to my shop after they just spent $75,999 on a Mercedes and has to spend another $500.00 on a Bluetooth module just make hands free phone calls wow they could not have thrown that in. my point is that in my situation they saw it fit to put me month to month instead of loosing 5 phones
