Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | Why is wells fargo sending so many cards? This is the 2nd time in about 7 months that I got a card without warning.. my other card I got did not expire until 2014 now this one is 2018. |

New card brings a new CVV and potentially a new exp. date, which means that you have to update all your services that charge the card automatically. For some services it may create a 1 - 2 months hassle. When you change CC data, they may tell you that your new automatic card payment option will take in effect in a month(s) and they may suggest to you to pay for that service manually. Now, the "pleasure" begins - you have two options: a) make the next payment manually (in this case they may take your next monthly payment automatically too - making a double pay for that month, effectively crediting the service in advance) OR b) if you believe that because you've made changes in advance (in a month) and you rely on automatic payments to continue, they may charge you a "later fee" (because they did not take the next payment automatically, as you expected, and you did not pay manually too)... BTW, I'm talking from my personal experience with using some services.
Bottom like, a frequent change of CC usually creates completely unnecessary hassle to me. And that's why I'd prefer to see that event as rare as possible. -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |

He didnt state whether he was getting new number on the card each time. I request new cards every few months for my daily spender to keep it looking good and I never have to worry about updating merchants with CVV codes. -- Usenet Block Accounts | Unlimited Accounts |

If you request a new card simply because the card is damaged, but not stolen or compromised, I have always had it come through with the same CC number and CVV.
Naturally, since the CVV is encrypted partly based on the CC#, if a new CC# is issued, then the CVV will obviously change.
But anyways, my initial point was that the OP didnt say if the CC# was different or not.
CVV is not allowed to be kept on file anyways, by any merchant, so beyond the initial payment set up it is of little use for auto-rebilling in the months ahead. -- Usenet Block Accounts | Unlimited Accounts |

CVV is simply used to verify card is more or less present with the card holder (card holder could memorize it to i suppose). Just an additional layer of protection.
Visa specifically forbids storage of that number as does the PCI DSS. This is a small layer of protection if there is a security breach. When you first add it to your profile it will be used and verified against your CC# but will then be destroyed once the transaction goes through.
One example is Sprint. My card data is saved so I can make payments each time, but the CVV field is always blank and must be manually typed it each time. Others simply accept the fact that it was entered correctly the first time so they realize they do not need it anymore for future billings unless the CC is updated. -- Usenet Block Accounts | Unlimited Accounts |

I did not request new cards and I did not hear anything from my bank about any bad activity going on.. I'm able to still use my old card which I will be doing until I call them up again to figure out what's going on. -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

OZOPremium join:2003-01-17 kudos:2 | I think it totally depends on the service, that charges you. Some strictly require all CC data and if something is changed - they will not charge you at all (and see my first post what they could expect to happen in this case, a "later fee" from you). Other services don't care about your CVV or even exp. data on the card . They simply charge you regularly... no matter what I have personal experience with both. -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |
