waytim join:2011-12-01 Sterling, MI | [Fixed] 900mhz ranges, questions I recently tried to get 900mhz service from M33 Access, a local WISP. I am 2.8 miles from the tower, i believe 150ft. I am surrounded by ~30ft pine trees, could not get a signal at 20ft. I was told it was pretty much helpless. What was strange to me was that I was told they wouldn't have to check for signal because they only do it for people further than 3 miles, and I shouldn't have a problem.
My questions are: what should the maximum effective range/penetration through woods, and how expensive would it be to build a tower higher than the trees, and know it will still work even then and that its not a range issue? |

The WISP should be able to push up a fiberglass pole to do a proper site survey. I would not erect a tower without one.
Cost of tower would depend on whether it can be bracketed to the house or needs to be guyed or freestanding. Price is in the range of $500 to $3000.
A 10 foot tripod on the roof with a 20 foot mast would get you 30 feet. -- Strange as it seems, no amount of learning can cure stupidity, and formal education positively fortifies it. -- Stephen Vizinczey |
