| [Rant] This makes me mad, 2 different brands, same machine. I probably shouldn't be surprised, but it still pisses me off.
I bought a Philips - DVP3345VB DVD Player/VCR and when I got it home, it wouldn't play VCR tapes correctly, so I took it back to the store. They had no more, so they exchanged it for a Toshiba SD-V296 DVD Player/VCR. When I got it home, I thought it looked familiar, and I was right, it was the same machine as the Philips. The only differences were the front panel and the remote, even the setup menus were the same!
To make matters worse, the Toshiba didn't work correctly either, it was a different problem than the Philips had.
My point is that I would have never expected that Philips and Toshiba would have anything to do with each other, and I never thought that they would stoop so low as to throw their brand name on second rate garbage. |

| reply to Timmn Philips isn't the only one. Many "brands" out there are often rebadged units made by other companies.
For example I too purchased a DVD/VCR combo a few years ago. I was looking at a magnavox unit that seemed quite nice and almost purchased it. On a last minute comparison I saw a no name unit (actually labeled SV2000 as the brand) that seemed to have the exact same specs. Upon closer examination it was clearly obvious that it was the same magnavox unit with just a different front panel. I ended up purchasing the no name unit and lickily it has been a workhorse for me. I have transferred countless hours of home movie tapes to DVD with excellent results.
However on the other hand I once purchased a 50 inch Philips plasma TV that was a rebranded Magnavox unit. That TV just plain old never worked right straight out of the box. I took it back and got a second one and that one was worse.
Many times there is one unheard of company that produces seemingly unrelated brands products. Such as Thomson Electronics. I know first hand that this company makes the RCA line as well as GE stuff. I once had two 27 inch CRT tv's back in the 90's. One was RCA and the other was a GE. They were the exact same TV with the exception being that one one unit the speaker grilles were slotted horizontally and the other was vertical. |

| reply to Timmn That is not a surprise.. when I went to Bestbuy locally, the Toshiba had the same remote as a [piece of junk] Magnavox dvd/vcr combo I bought elsewhere- that stopped working after only 2 years or so. I suspected it was made by the same company as the Magnavox..

I guess you've never seen anything branded Philips Magnavox. They're the same company. Back in the early 2000s they started to cut back on the Magnavox branding and went with either Philips or Philips Magnavox for most stuff. Philips has all but disappeared and holds no relevance in the current CE marketplace. They currently make low end products, Norelco electric razors, SonicCare electric toothbrushes and theyre big in the heathcare industry with medical imaging and diagnostic equipment -- 2011 Time Warner Cable Forum @ DSLReports Poster Of The Year!
