DavesnothereNo-BHELL-ity DOES have its Advantages join:2009-06-15 START&Cogeco kudos:6 2 edits | Profile Speeds for Indie FTTN DSL Somewhere here during the past week or so, a post was made which stated that Legacy GAS DSL was an UP-TO the advertised speed ballgame, regarding the speed profile which would be set for your line and included for whatever $$ you pay.
They then went on to say that FTTN DSL (aka FIBe from an Indie ISP) was instead a "We promise to have Bell set your profile to the numbers which match what you bought from us, or else Bell will perform on the IISPs behalf all necessary repairs in exchange for the $95 FTTN setup fee, in order to make the profile work at that speed" arrangement, and was mentioned that way by the poster as a justification for Bell charging the setup fee to the IISP (and passed on to us).
Were these statements TRUE or FALSE ?
Please quote proof from Tariffs. |

pallo join:2011-12-01 canada | Distances on legacy DSL can be downright awful - up to 5 km from the CO, maybe more in some cases but with FTTN you're never more than 800 meters from the remote. Also I've noticed some FTTN tiers sync slightly higher, assuming to be able to achieve the advertised speeds (12M FTTN syncing at 14M is not uncommon). |
|
 | reply to Davesnothere Bell's FTTN tariffs still say "Up to" and since there is only $0.30/month difference between 6/1 and 25/7, there isn't much point arguing about what people "paid for" since the whole access part of costs is effectively the same regardless of delivered FTTN speed.
With adjacent retail speed tiers being only $1-4 apart in many cases, there isn't much room for ISPs to split hairs for subscribers on in-between speeds either.
AFAIK, the $95 charge is nothing more than a weighed average of line-related costs amortized over a projected install frequency, it is not a guarantee of anything. The likelihood of getting "that speed" just happens to be higher simply because FTTN takes out many variables. |

| I checked the 5440 tariffs off of Bell's web site.
They do use the "up to" terminology.
When I have time, I'll have to peruse the transcripts of the 2011 and 2010 public hearings to catch Bell's statements to justify the high installation costs. |

| Consumer orders 12/1 from B#ell, sync rate set to 14/1 by B#ell so customer gets full 12/1.
Consumer orders 12/1 from Indie, sync rate set to 12/1 by B#ell regardless, customer gets less than 12/1 after overhead.
How is this matching speeds?
How is this regulatory symmetry?
How is this NOT predatory, anti-competitive behaviour?

And the 'competition' is only enforced as set out by the CRTC. Our Federal Government generally doesn't care about such matters. |

zorxd join:2010-02-05 Quebec, QC | reply to dillyhammer Is that true? If so it's one more reason to get cable.
Fibe 16 from Bell has a sync rate of over 19 000 kbps. |

Consumer orders 12/1 from Indie, sync rate set to 12/1 by B#ell regardless, customer gets less than 12/1 after overhead. Not true... On the TSI forum, you'll notice that people who ordered 12 m in Ontario got sync rates of 14 m. People who ordered 10 m in Quebec got sync rate of 12 m, myself included. One can argue that those who received lower sync rate received it because their line couldn't handle the full speed. |

My 12/1 install is scheduled for today, so I'll know more in some hours.
Not that I'm looking for a shitstorm or anything.

On the 12/1 profile obviously.
2nd tech has not come yet. I'll let him/her do their job.
But hey, it's noon on install day and I'm on. Flawless [Almost] victory.

Mike No worries, I'm sure your escape from CogecoTraz (or is it Alcageco) will go without a hitch. |

Mike *highfive*
Mine will be today or next week. Freedom! |
|
 | reply to jfmezei Also note the rest of the world has *no* costs (the isp gets nothing) except Verizon Fios which is true fiber to the home and is priced about a thousand times less than what it would cost in Canada with no throttling or overuse fees and unlimited bandwidth. |

You know what? Feels pretty good.
I was sad when I left Teksavvy. Even wrote that in my confirmation email - Nov 26 2010.
It'll take a little getting used to, going form 30/2 to 12/1, but going from $160 to $62 a month... that won't take long. I'm break even on the install costs and everything else in 3 months. And my conscience got a nice massage.
Feels pretty good.
