Re: Profile Speeds for Indie FTTN DSL

I am on teksavvys 25/7 and i am synced @ 27/9 for my sync rates it mostly covers overhead.

Yeah, they only screw wholesale on ADSL1 & ADSL2+ speeds. VDSL2 25/7 gets its proper profile.

Ah but is that because that's the only profile Bell has for their VDSL2 service? (25/7)

Looking at biting the bullet and going 25/7 myself but I can't wrap my head around the final pricing for the two providers I'm looking at because neither of them make it clear what the bill at the end of the month will actually be (Teksavvy vs. Bell)

I upgraded yesterday from 12/1 to 16/1 and now I'm on 19455/797 despite the fact my line can handle the full upload. I like the download speed and don't want to risk them lowering it so I may not bother asking for the full upload. Tough decision to make.

Myself, I'm staying quiet for now - though the 797 is quite pathetic.

I actually changed my mind.

I've asked for the bump to the 16/1 profile and asked TSI to insist on the full 1088 upload in the ticket. If they leave the download at 16 I'm good with that. I'm just having a couple of issues with my u/l capping out at ~644k. As in, it's fscking sloooooooooow.

Edit - My request to TSI did not go well. They won't do that stuff in the direct forum. My call went CSR to Tech Support to CSR, and at that point I actually backed away not satisfied I was going to accomplish what I was hoping to.

I changed the request in direct forum now to just bump my upload to 1088. If they bump my download to 12 I'll deal with it then.

Well, got a little lucky.

TSI Jeremy handled this for me in the direct forums, put the ticket in last night and got the response back this morning.

B#ell raised the upload to 1085 - about 98% capacity. We're going to keep an eye on this. Left the download untouched.

Line Status: In Service UpTime:
Line Profile Name: al1_d14272-5056_u1088-256
DLM State: DISABLED Equipment Type: 7330_REM
Operational Status Speed (Kbs) Relative Capacity Occupation (%) Noise Margin (0..31 dB) Signal Power (0..20 dBm) Attenuation (0..60 dB) Block count
UpStream 1085.0 98.0 7.3 12.2 5.0 4071981891.0
DownStream 14272.0 56.0 18.9 13.7 16.3 891751374.0

We're going to let this ride for a few days make sure it's all nice and stable like, then pop the profile up to 16/1 on Monday if it stays good. Or... might just leave it.

I did several, on both. So little difference I just posted the last one I did because I'm lazy.

This one is what I used to configure my QoS.

I would be pleased to get your current specs and price, if the decrepid 50-year or more old phone wire from the pole would just finish rusting thru and fall down on its own, the next time two squirrels chase each other along it.

THEN, B$ELL would HAVE to replace it, even if nobody asked.

Bell aren't psychics, you would still need to call them to let them know squirrels literally brought your line down to ask for repair

And though I was joking, I would simply LOVE to have footage of something like that happening in my back yard, or too many perched birds, etc., and post it on YouTube.

Then watch B$ELL cry 'copyrighted content violation' as I posted video of their wire falling.

@teksavvy.com

That's why they have fast internet in Japan... Godzilla and company brought down their old telephone poles etc. May be Frank & Gorden can be convinced to chew on the pole?

One of these days, Real Estate/rental listings would need to add xDSL speed profiles...

Birds ate my phone line about 2 years ago. One of the 3 techs didn't believe me. Unless a squirrel somehow managed to sneak into the birds nest and eat 5 out of 6 pairs of the phone line.

12/1 service fron Teksavvy, over a dry loop, 1 static IP, 300G cap, $62 per month tax in.

Soooo many things could hasten the demise of that decrepid wire of yours. A malicious neighbour. Miscreant neighbourhood kids. Wayward vandals. Copper thieves. Aliens. Many other totally inexplicable things.

AND FREE OFF-PEAK USAGE

But OOPS, I chose my words poorly !

I wasn't asking you to tell me the info (already knew, unless some TSI curveball got thrown at you in the last few days ).

I meant that I coveted the deal you now have, and should have earlier said 'have' rather than 'get'.

But there is no harm in you still advertising the details here.

As for the phone wire, it is a prehistoric 8 or more pair cable which feeds our equally ancient shared external terminal demarc box.

The wire passes over and frequently rubs the crest of a 'barn-like' building to reach the pole, both beyond our back fence.

On the day when I had my Cogeco installed, as the tech was leaving, I saw another guy wearing a tool belt in the back yard.

His vest had 'Bell' on it.

I hung around and schmoozed with him and heard his partner on the pole tell him that he could see the copper of some of the pairs where the wire touched the barn, and that he could not establish the existence of a good pair.

I guess that included my still active but flakey TSI pair, which started out with good specs 3 years prior, even though the cable had rubbed for decades.

As they had none of this wire onboard and had come here from 40 miles out to do an expedited install for my neighbour in the same building who got lured into one of Bell's current retail bundles, they ran him a fresh two-pair wire and said that they would ask for the proper crew to be dispatched to replace the multi-pair cable.

That was Dec 16th and no such crew has been here so far.

One of my other neighbours of this MDU had a similar observation and outcome in July 2011 with a local Bell tech, who robbed the spare pair from an adjacent neighbour across our shared driveway to service this guy's Acanac DSL when HE moved in back then.

That Bell tech also had said that a crew would be around in a few days to do the proper repair to the bigger wire, and to do any applicable re-feeds, but nothing happened that time either.

This kind of BS is part of why I think I still dislike B$ELL moreso than COUGH-Geco.

My Cogeco feed costs more but it JUST WORKS.

For now, I'm waiting for some TPIA announcements for Cogeco Cable, but your numbers are VERRRRY INTERESTING.

AND, to continue your list of possible wire demises :

Kids with BB guns using birds and squirrels on the wire as target practice.

BTW, some of our Squirrels are pretty large, enough so to make the 'hood CATS wary of them.

From the linked article:

"Yet another legend involves that shoes hanging from telephone wires signals someone leaving the neighborhood onto bigger and better things."

How apt. Replace "neigbourhood" with "bell" and there you have it.

I recall major news media coverage of shoes being hurled at a certain head of state about 5 years back.
