Bell tech showed up today and exploded my BS meter.

So I have my first DSL line installed from Acanac. I had my own modem so as soon as things were active, I had my connection running. So I was a bit surprised this morning when a Bell technician showed up.

I'm not sure if he was rude or socially inept, but he really did seem to be unhappy I was installing DSL from a third party. Oh well, everyone has their preferences. But then the conversation went funny.

- First the speed. He kept saying over and over "The best you can get with a third party is FIVE megabit. You'll never get more than FIVE megabit." Note that my line is already provisioned for six.

- He told me that Bell had data caps so they could "collect money and return it to artists such as the movie and music industry." Funny I thought the only artists Bell supported were scam artists.

- He told me VDSL wouldn't be here for seven years in my area but that a 25 meg connection from Bell would be available in two. Isn't that the same thing?

I'm getting a second line installed soon, so my next step will be to record the next tech.

That would results in major lawsuits by "artists" and "copyright holder" wanting to claim their money.

I could have gotten into it with him right then and there. But he was probably just feeding me the tripe that his company feeds him. All it would do is precipitate an argument (one that might result in him stomping back to the CO and being inventive with my twisted pairs). Recording the tripe and exposing it might result in Bell getting their linesmen to hold back on the propaganda.

Yes he was! I was tempted to show him too, but again, I don't want him stomping off to the CO after.

So one large evil corporation battling another -- sounds like we need to arrange more of them.

Yes! Both in technology, and estimates! You see, the 2 years for Bell is "Bell upgrade time", which is roughly an average of 7 years in real time - but with a rather large variance.

Funny stuff. The level of training (and the over all intelligence level) of techs varies, this guy seems to be on the low end of the scale.

Unrelated technology but this story fits in with that certain “calibre of people” out in the world. A few years back I had some counter tops replaced, selecting laminate over which was then the trendy granite tops. The installer raved on about the "lethal radioactivity" in natural stone for and said, and let me quote this little gem of his "you can just put a piece of chicken on it (granite) and it will cook it because of the radiation – its like having Chernobyl in your house.”

I smiled quietly to myself, there was little point arguing or even educating they guy.

That's ok. I made a bell tech cry once. All is fair and it's open season.

Great after-supper read. Would have made some great sound bytes had you recorded them.

heh that's not the best part. After I made some Bell kid cry in my living room, they send someone else who was "senior". We had a good laff about it.

He is the one that got me to switch to videotorn.

So when Videotron sent a tech over, it was the F'n same guy! damn did we laff.

I asked the guy, wtf you work two jobs. He says yeah I do both Bell and Videotron. He ended up leaving Bell and stayed with videotron. He said it was the better company to work for.

He says every time I get a call for a bell customer I got bitched at. It wasn't worth it.

Says something...

Nope. They are just unhappy. They don't like their jobs working for Bell, but it pays the bills.

When I did a move I had another videotron guy who was again an ex-bell tech who told me his whole life story about how he was ex-military and who did the former Yugoslavia war. He said the exact same thing as the the guy I wrote about above. Almost word for word.

He said the best thing he ever did was leave Bell for videotron due to the bitching by the customers he had to visit. he said it was night and day.

Says something...

Dear Lynn,

pardon my ignorance here, but could you be more specific on the nature of the "it" the bell guy is being accused of being full of ?

Hey, those guys are just out there trying to make an honest buck by performing a useful service. Of the last 5 Bell techs that I dealt with, I only disliked one and he didn't do anything particularly wrong, just relatively poor attitude, but that can happen on any job. As someone already said, he's just feeding you the BS that he's been fed with. If you've got axes to grind, grind'em with the slime inhibiting the HO.

Not completely certain, JF, but Lynn just MIGHT be using a trade-specific abbreviation there.

ROFPML !!!

BLOD !!! = Best Laugh of Day

Maybe BLOM, E-ven ! (Snagglepuss)

Two comments about that :

(1) The whole idea of Bell voluntarily DOING what the tech claimed is both unbelievable and laughable in itself.

(b) If only it WERE true, some of us might not mind contributing a bit (former professional musician speaking).

What can I say? That definitely pegs the meter.
