 | Carpet from Lowes Looking at getting about 430sf of carpet installed, anyone have any experience getting some installed from Lowes? We had a guy come out and measure yesterday, I plan on comparing their price to a local store. Were looking at the Mohawk smartstrand. |

| I've found the "real" carpet stores to be cheaper and have a much better "in stock" selection. The installers are usually the same guys - subcontractors who get paid by piecework.
If you can find a local carpet retailer with in-house installation by hourly employees, you are more likely to get a better installation. I can only think of one carpet store in this area that has actual "employees". -- ...because I care. |

We looked at Lowes, Home Depot, and a couple local, private carpet stores and ended up going with one of the private stores. They didn't install it but they seem to have a few "crews" who they will always use. In fact, the store had this guy's install schedule and set up the time and day. That's a pretty setup for the customer as that install crew wants to stay on the store's good side and keep work coming to them...
Other thing about the private guys is you could "negotiate" prices. I think at Lowes the price you pay is the price on the tag. |

 | reply to supernac Thanks for the replies, is carpet normally sold by the square foot? That's how Lowes lists it, I always thought its was sold by the yard. |

HallPremium,MVM join:2000-04-28 Dayton, OH kudos:1 | It makes it sound cheaper that way ! You're right, it should be by the yard. Someone sees "$3/ft" at Lowes or "$9/yd" elsewhere and is likely to only remember the "$3" or "$9" and think Lowes is cheaper. |

One square yard = nine square feet. So, $3/sqft would be $27/sqyd. |

| reply to supernac I worked for a major home improvement retailer for years and I can tell you you should go with a local company if at all possible. The quality of work will be better and you can normally work out any issues much easier with a local owner than with a big box company who has no idea who the installers are and can't make any decisions if you have a problem until they get with a third party installer. Its not always worth the few dollars you save when your installation becomes a horror story and I have seen plenty of them. -- I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard is not what I meant. | reply to supernac Were going to stop buy a local shop today to see what they have to say, still haven't heard back from Lowes. I'm leaning towards a local shop at this point though. |

My point was that it is a 9X difference and not a 3X difference. We can't both be right in that regard. |

 | reply to supernac We just put in about 450 sq. ft. of carpeting. We looked at HD, Lowes, and 3 local places. We found the box stores carry special colors made just for the box stores that were much more plain/neutral and the local dealers get much better colors. Price wise they are all about the same. We ended up paying $1,550 for our 450 sq. ft. to get a 30 year rated Ansonylon, pad, and installation. They even turned the extra into (2) 3'x4' rugs. They squared them off and edged them at no extra charge. -- "Anyway I am going to need to go with, never argue with an idiot as they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience." - matt5 |
