Re: [STB] Moxi

So much for 'lifetime' DVRs - the Moxi is a brick without guide data, because it can't do manual recordings.

I priced Moxi vs lifetime contract for TIVO a year ago and they were almost identical. I think Moxi was $549 and Tivo was $599.

Yep, just like folks (like me) with the "lifetime" Replay DVR's that are now nothing but glorified (manual) VCR's since last summer:

But I guess since your Moxi can't do manuals...you guys REALLY are SOL. I'm sure glad I didn't drop $$$ for this white elephant!

Um the guide data has not been discontinued and they say they don't have plans of that changing. They explain on their website that a post claiming otherwise was a mistake.

Dude, that was the truth at the time it was posted, not based on your late reply. The guide data was announced to be going away at end of 2013 until they quickly backtracked and removed the post.

Doesn't really matter, the point is the same - if Arris decides to nix the guide data feed at anytime in future, the Moxi is a brick without a software update.

Just as a follow-up, that previous statement was regarding the Moxi boxes sold over retail - which they have stopped selling.

The story Telcodad linked to is their new Moxi Gateway product that is now being sold directly to MSO's.

Just keeping the information accurate that as of right now the guide data isn't going away, but you're right that if at some point the guide data service were to end, even though it is done through a seperate company called Tribune Media, which is the same company TiVo uses, the user would be SOL. However the same could be said with any customer owned DVR like TiVo or HTPC's like SageTV, which was purchased by Google on June 20th, 2011 and its online store was shut. No statement has been made about the future availability of SageTV products.

Not true, please take some time to read what's been posted. Tivo, Sage, HTPCs all are still functional as DVRs without guide data because they can do manual (time-based) recordings. Only the Moxi cannot, and that's why it would be a brick as I said.

you sure tivo can? because without a subscription, tivo is basically a brick they don't let you set times to record without guide data... at least the S3 tivo's I have dont...
