If you don't do it, others may do it for you. For example, you may get a "courtesy" confirmation mail, revealing your full name, home address, etc. after you've made an online purchase... And you can't stop that or even prevent it from happening. -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |

When purchasing in store - with a credit card - that information is already known. In fact - your name and address is public information. If it wasn't - no one would know how to contact anyone else. -- Brian

The first 5 digits (xxx-xx) at least. Kinda ironic that many banks etc only show the last 4 digits for "security purposes". Thus if you know the last 4 digits + birthdate + state of birth you've got a full SSN. -- Don't feed trolls--it only makes them grow! |

OZOPremium join:2003-01-17 kudos:2 | reply to CylonRed It's not "that information is already known". The question is to whom? It's known by you, of course, by your friends, etc. Even by merchant who sold you something. Even your SSN is known to someone... It doesn't mean that it should be published on the internet. It's a big difference...
Many don't think about their privacy. Much less about privacy of others. Here is yet another example. You want to keep your DoB out or public knowledge (there could be many reasons why you want to do that)? Now, here is your friend, who instead of congratulating you in person, sends congratulations on your birthday using social media... Of course you may send him back - "Thanks, but now I have to close my profile..." But it's too late at this time It's not a full SSN, but just wait. Step by step and it may/will somehow slip into social media to...
Bottom line is - if there is an industry making billions on profiling people and people in the US generally don't mind (so far they are just relaxed, later on they may call those who try to keep it private a "potential terrorist", three letter agencies are working to make it happen) - the privacy in this country will deteriorate on the day by day basis. And, BTW, it's almost impossible to get it back, but who cares here... -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |

Has nothing to do with posting to a site, and everything to do with the databases behind the site, which in turn can be linked to still other databases and fill in the blanks to build a complete profile. Unique identifiers facilitate the linking and hence the value.
Of course they don't show everything they have - that would creep the members out. But it doesn't stop them from selling it. |

Nope.
I prefer the "old fashioned" way of "networking". It's called talking (face-to-face) You won't find me on any social networking sites.
