[HSI] Check my SB6121 levels

Click for full size
Just got Charter HSI and I was hoping someone could look at my levels and see if they look good. Not having any problems or anything, just making sure everything is right.

Within spec, but watch that downstream SNR. 33 is the bare minimum. Upstream level is cutting it kinda close to at 49. Not too much wiggle-room.

I agree 33/34 is on the lowside for downstream SNR and 49 is getting lose to pushing is for upstream PL they recomend 55 or less. I'm at 36 on Downstream SNR and 42 on upstream power level.

How can it be improved. I got internet service only and they ran a new line straight from the box to the modem.

There could be any number of reason for your borderline levels. You could post in the Direct forum and see if they think it's worth investigating further.

I noticed that the line comes from the tap to a 2-way splitter and from one leg of the splitter to my modem... the other leg isn't used and is open. Wouldn't it have been better for them to use a ground block instead of a splitter since I have internet only?

Well, the ground block should be there anyway for electrical grounding purposes, but yes, I would think since you are only receiving HSI service, you would have a straight shot from the GB. An un-terminated splitter is not a good idea for a number of reasons.

You shouldn't have one end un-terminated. You need one of these on the unused side.

Shouldn't even need the splitter...

Well no but as long as it's there he should terminate the unused side. If he ever decides to get cable in the future he may need it.

I just ordered this... »www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002J···_details

I'll post updated signal levels once I get it installed.

You really don't need a ground block. What you need is a barrel splice.

There should already be a ground block installed. If not, someone needs to come out and ground your drop properly.

Yes... the 2-way splitter has the ground. I am going to move the ground to the ground block and bypass the splitter.

or you could have gone to Lowes or something and gotten the thing I showed you for less than $1 and just terminated the unused side of the splitter.

But that won't get the upstream level down to a more reasonable level, which was the original goal.

Got the ground block installed and bypassing the splitter. My downstream power levels went up and the SNR stayed about the same. My upstream power level went down a little bit.

They probably installed the splitter to keep your downstream level in-spec. They should have terminated the open port, though, and used the appropriate weather protection, if necessary.

You could post in the Direct Forum and see if the levels you have right now warrant further investigation.

Since it didn't help the downstream SNR, what is more important the 3db improvement in upstream power or putting it back the way it was to lower the downstream power level?
