| [general] Remote Desktop over Exeede I sometimes need to use remote desktop to control machines at work. Usually the conenction is about 3 seconds slow over wildblue (500kpbs connection) and not much better over a 1mbit wildblue connection I had in the past.
Anyone using Remote Desktop over Exeede? Any comments etc.? |

grohgregDunno. Ask The Chief join:2001-07-05 Dawson Springs, KY 2 edits | Probably not enough new users to supply a qualified answer to that question, but I'll give you a quasi-technical one. But it's based upon a supposition that Remote Desktop relies on IP tunneling (like VPN). The issue with tunneling then, is primarily one of latency. The "old" Wildblue - those connections who've not yet upgraded to either Excede5 or Exede12 service - have three or more times the lag of a conventional satellite connection. This issue was self-inflicted. There's a good chance that the new ownership won't make the same mistake. Early reports are that Exede lag is consistent with the normal 600ms neighborhood one would expect from a GEO satellite.
IP tunneling over satellite works best through a VPN accelerator. Doubtful that Exede will offer a value-added service like this on consumer-grade plans. That said, cutting the latency by 2/3 and more will still show a marked improvement in VPN tunneling capability when compared to the "old" Wildblue.

| reply to Aranarth Yups like Greg said you primary problem will be latency. I don't know how mu speed actually affects it if any but I can tell you from experiance with the lower latency like Greg was talking about and the consistant speeds of 1.3 to 1.5 Mb/s I got with my old business system on HN before that service went in the toilet is that remote desktop was a hit and miss proposition. I did usually get it to work every time but one time it would connect and work flawlessly and the next time I would have to fight with it for an hour or more to get it to connect. I am sure this probably could have been resolved at least to some extent if I had of paid the extra $10 a month for a static IP but back then I wasn't as knowledgable about what my problems were exactly. I am sure it still wouldn't have been all a field of roses though even with a static IP. There is a good chance that in the beggining at least that you will get it to work at least part time, but how long that success holds out is going to depend on how fast the latency from the satellite getting populated starts to rise and that is something that is simply going to be a wait and see game. -- HughesNet elite plan/.74 dish w/1watt trans. / 9000 modem / 3 computers on a linksy's wired network |

 | Looks like the best deal may be to go through Dish Network.
Their starting plan has a 10GB monthly cap and you save $5/month off your existing dish plan if you bundle. I dont see any documentation on their website but I have read multiple user posts at Wildblueworld that state the above.
This does not make very much sense. Doesnt Echostar/Dish own Hughesnet? |

| reply to Aranarth I am a new Exede customer, and I used Logmein this morning to access a few work PC's. It was smooth, and very fast. I can't say how far "behind" it was because nobody was at the machines as I controlled them. I can say that the connection was very smooth, no re-painting of the screens like I would see via 3G or the old WB.

but I'm not current on Echostar's involvement with Wildblue today....Echostar was an original investor in Wildblue in 2003:

 | reply to Aranarth I've used TeamViewer and Remote Desktop with my Exede connection in the past week. I felt that Remote Desktop worked better than TeamViewer
The Remote desktop connection was to a webserver in a datacenter and thus there was no significant latency on the server side. I found it only a fraction of a second slower than with a cable connection, not hindering work in any way. Very satisfied.
With a TeamViewer session to a family member, I could notice more of a lag, but since that was to a different computer on a home connection, it could have also been their latency that made it slightly slower. Not sure what kind of connection they have. |

| reply to Aranarth You may want to try logmein it might work out better over satt. internet than what windows comes with. They have a free option which I use often when I am away from home via the app on my phone. If it works well over a 3G smartphone I can only imagine it will be just as good for you in your case. |

| Wednesday, I was using teamviewer and also the usual windows RDS.
The machine using teamviewer was on charter business with 30Mbit/3mbit connection and the RDS was to a webserver on (I think) a sonet-3 connection.
Both connections were running at a noticeable lag of about 1 to 2 seconds. I did a speedtest.net to see what my ping was and it was running abut 1600ms. (typical for me)
I'm a computer geek and do remote desktop support by trade so I'm familiar with the effects of latency and bandwidth etc.
Teamviewer seemed think there was enough bandwidth not to greatly reduce color depth it was just input lag that was driving me nuts.
Luckily I was just logging and replying to emails so all I had to do was copy and paste into our customer care program email itself was handled on gmail directly.
I'm going to keep an eye on Exede and see about possibly upgrading in the future. I'm waiting on Frontier to see if they will finally offer DSL in the area. Considering how spotty people have been finding Frontier DSL I also have to look at 4G LTE. |

 | reply to hdman Does anyone remote to a host computer via GoToMyPc?
I work from home and remote into a host computer at our main office via GoToMyPc via a 3G connection. I'm at the point where I am seriously considering either quitting my job or moving because of lack of high speed internet. The 3G is so frustrating because of the varying speeds and after many calls to AT&T and the public service commissioner I cannot get Uverse even though it is available to several houses in my neighborhood.
I am patient person, but after a year of remote desktop via dialup and a couple of years of hughesnet I am so frustrated with the high latency and slow speeds.
I would sign up for Excede today if I knew for sure of being able to remote in without latency or other issues. |

There IS latency with any Sat. connection. However, for remote desktop, it is rather minimal. I am using VOIP via Exede and it works quite well. Yes, there is a delay, but its OK. I also use Screen Connect via Exede and it works very well. I don't use gotomypc, but what does concern me is that I too had 3G and used ScreenConnect and it worked fine.
I fear your issues may be partially due to your choice of remote software......but I can't be sure. ScreenConnect is software that I buy and host on a server at my office and it is VERY efficient in how it uses badnwidth. I can't comment on G2MPC.
