I am surprised right now how good availability is. Definitely improved with the longer retention. |

 | reply to imtim83 Why do we need more retention? It is 3 1/2 years almost. |

Wow a lot of people viewed this topic. Quite interesting to say the least. |

New subs, and those that don't archive locally, need longer retention than older subs. Theres also increased competition from media outlets adjusting their models to meet demand for internet on demand access to their huge libraries. If big media had created their own subscription network ten years ago, we'd only be using groups to discuss our stamp collections. |

 | I'd rather have completion than a focus on more retention. If 3 1/2 years isn't good enough, wtf is? Jesus most shit gets reposted after a few years anyway and if not you can request to have it reposted. |

Just today I got 2 incompletes. One 58 days old and the other 86 days. And its not just my provider. Apparently they have been nuked by many providers. Some stuff is being nuked within a few hours of being posted. If this keeps up, Usenet will have a tough time surviving the next five years. |

 | reply to sandman_1 I have eighty years of entertainment available from my media player selection of internet movie, television, and music outlets massive libraries. Besides single subscription convenience, usenet providers need additional selling points to compete, and cellular access and retention are all they have. I see browser based single subscription entertainment services, possibly usenet infrastructure hosted, in the future. |

samphar join:2012-02-15 Alpharetta, GA | Newsgroups tread in dangerous ground. On one hand they are sworn to uphold copyright infringement and remove content but on the other hand no pays $15 per month for text usage. If usenet continues to become more popular it will risk increased scrutiny and possibly fall like news-service.to did in the Netherlands. Right now we have the best combination of speed and availability.
I used to download current songs from the rapidshare/megaupload fileservers. I have found that since the closure of megaupload my ability to find files has decreased dramatically. I expect usenet will go the same route. One day we will wake up and usenet will have too many incompletes as to not worth subscribing. We are truly living in the golden age of warez and mp3s. |

If this happened.. no one would pay for usenet.. you see at the core as much as the companys selling usenet wish to remain off the radar.. their service is useless if they just capitulate to anything.. so if usenet providers are drawn into a fight.. I think they'll fight.. (you might look at recent lobbied legislation at legislators as a way for MPAA etc. to legally attack usenet too with new rules)
Bare in mind that easy prey usenet companys have fallen.. but companys like giganews/highwinds may put up a bigger fight if it's their turn on "the stop piracy merry go round" bare in mind doom and gloom predictors have been claiming usenet would be the next on the list like a 100 times.. hasn't happened yet..
Also usenet has been challenged in court before and has precedents said by imtim83:Newsgroups in 5 years time If you want my honest opinion 5 years is a long time.. there is a possibility in 5 years time that those of us so-called "data collectors" will no longer need the usenet.. that is quite possible.. we shall see in 2017..
Doesn't that sound so far away..?? it is vibrationally from where we are now |
