Router suggestions/problems

Recently I upgraded my internet connection to 50 Mbps. My router (linksys WRT54GL) doesn't seem to be able to keep up at these speeds. When I run the modem through the router to my network I return speeds of 36 Mbps from my provider. When I run straight to my main PC I get a very even 46 Mbps through-put. All tests were wired, I don't expect to get these speeds on wifi.

So something is going on with the router. Maybe it's just a setting? It should be able to handle these speeds.

As a side note, I am interested in upgrading in the next while to a router with better wifi hardware.

Suggestions as to where I should start with this?

Buy a better router (and 802.11n will give you more than 50Mbps).

Ah yes, I was referring to the wired connection speeds only. I believe the router is 1000Mbps wired. Even if it's only 100, I shouldn't be having issues hitting 50 wired.

As for the wireless side things I need to upgrade that. I haven't looked into new routers recently but some of the Asus stuff seemed the way to go for me. For instance: »ca.asus.com/en/Networks/Wireless···N_Series

EDIT: since we are on the asus router topic, what's the difference between the 56U and the 53 I posted?

Does anyone have input as per the wired speeds being bottle necked by the router?

It sounds like the routers processor is not powerful enough to keep up with that much traffic flow. Just because it has 100mb interfaces doesn't necessarily mean it can forward fast enough to produce full line rate on them. I had a similar experience with an older apple airport extreme, and once I placed another router in my network my performance pretty much doubled.

Too funnny how did you get to that page....
No such thing as 53U as far as I know of.

Here is the n page
»ca.asus.com/en/Networks/Wireless···N_series

Click on the 56U model at the bottom. It has better throughput and NAT performance than their newer 66U (which is your requirement) , but probably not quite as good wifi........

He did not call it a 53U. Amazon shows the RT-N53 has been available since October 1, 2011 in the US.

It doesn't show on the link you provided because it is listed separately in the dual-band unit section.

I ended up going with the 66U. From the benchmarks I read the throughput wasn't that much worse and I regularly stream HD content over wifi to the HTPC and tablets. Actually the only computer that is wired does all the downloading from the internet through SAB, then re-streams to the various devices, sometimes simultaneously. So I think this was a good approach. Either the 56U or the 66U will blow the doors off what I have now.

Next question... Real good NAS or upgrade to a better multipurpose server. (o:
