Electric Range

Hey all...

Wife's birthday is coming up here quickly and she wants a new range for her birthday. (Before the 'it's a trap' comments, I'm absolutely positive she wants one.)

I'm thinking no more than $1000 but there's wiggle room.

She wants flat top and I think induction is WAY too expensive (at the moment).

What're the top picks right now?

Flat top does not mean induction. You might want to try Sears for a flat top electric range.

It's a trap! No woman want's a cooking appliance for (insert holiday or special occasion here).

Here's the good news: You can get a decent ceran top electric range for $400-600. Then you'll have some money left over to get her a real gift! Jewelry. Women want jewelry. It doesn't matter what kind, just as long as it costs you a lot of money.

I just bought a new Maytag range for $430 (MER7765WW) at Lowe's. It isn't real fancy, but works just fine. She likes the convection and "warming" features.

This wasn't a spur of the moment request. She has been asking for one for a couple years.

I appreciate the marital advice but would prefer useful advice on purchasing a good quality range.

I don't have the answers, but the questions to ask when comparing models are:

- how easily does the surface scratch when heavy pots and pans get moved across it ?
- how easily does the surface crack if a heavy pot is being dropped on it ?
- how easy is it to clean the surface when spilled food burns onto the hot surface ?
- how expensive is it to replace a damaged surface ?

Obviously don't believe everything a marketing brochure or eager salesman tells you. Try to find reviews from customers using the same or similar cook top.

I know from a number of people that they purchased flat electric cook tops because of the clean appearance when new only to find out that they didn't stay that way when used (with the cost of replacing the surface being prohibitively high).

Just be careful of what may be the real $$ trap. You may need your electric wiring revised. What size breaker do you have now? Is the old range plugged into a receptacle?

Is taking her out and letting her look not an option?

I don't say as marital advice, but coming from a person who cooks. There are many things about a stove that I want/need/like/dislike that don't make it into general conversation. If somebody else in the house were to run out and buy me a new range, it likely wouldn't be what I want.

It might even be small details. . all the rest of the kitchen appliances have blue fluorescent displays, but the stove is green. That clashes.

All I can do is give you my experience with a Whirlpool Gold Smooth Top I bought in 2003. As you can see from the images it is the same as it was new. No scratches and is easily cleaned.

It doesn't count if you never use it.

Are you looking for a cooktop, or an actual range?

My advice would be to get one with the controls in the front, so your not reaching over burning hot pots to adjust the temperature.

+1

Years back, wifey seriously wanted a new dishwasher for her birthday, so I picked one out and had it installed as the surprise. She was happy, but in the "it's the thought that counts" kind of way. If I could re-do, the surprise should have been to take her shopping to have her pick it out. This one has none of the features she had her eye on so I found out some time later.

As for stoves - We got in the last year a Maytag Gemini smoothtop range. It's got 2 ovens, the smaller upper one we use the most. You don't waste energy to heat up a whole oven when the smaller one will do. We don't need a toaster oven anymore with it. Wifey loves that 2 things can be cooking the same time, especially at the holidays.

We also got the convection model, which will run you a couple hundred more, but the one without can be had for $1K if you shop around.

Seriously consider letting your wife pick it out. You can't afford every option out these days so let her decide which ones are her top wants. We're really happy with the Gemini but all that might be useless to your wife. They're all different (and I don't me the stoves, lol)

It is absolutely an option and something we WILL do. But going into that blind is a terrible idea. As I have zero knowledge of these kinds of things, I don't want to say "oh, that looks like a fair price for that feature set" when I come to find out that it's a terrible brand with awful reliability or that those features aren't really used.

I was hoping for specific model recommendations or brand recommendations and a specific line that people have installed or used that I can spring board from.

I do need to look at the electrical, as whizkid suggested. We've got a sizable panel (200A service) but not sure what's running to the stove.

The top right group of breakers (looks like 2 40 amp breakers) is for the "Range"

You referring to your wife? Mine cooks ♥ so you couldn't be talking about her.

We haven't had any problem with that with ours in the back.

You should rewire that receptacle for the stove. Current code calls for 4 prong receptacles, 2 hots, a neutral and a ground. You're not required to change it in this circumstance but it is a good idea.

Is there a safety concern with the 3 prong receptacle? Or will I not be able to buy a current model due to the older receptacle?
