| [SSD]Accidentally Had My SSD Scheduled To Defrag I put a Crucial m4 SSD in a laptop a couple of months ago, and forgot to turn the defrag function off under Task Scheduler after loading Win 7 Pro on it.
I found this on Crucial's site:
»forums.crucial.com/t5/Solid-Stat···-p/71051
I have no idea how many times it defragged and used up write cycles. I can't find the log which tells me. The SSD still works fine and fast. Where do I find the log? I just want to get a rough idea how many times it defragged so that I have some knowledge of what the long-term performance of the SSD will be. -- Somebody's Back In Town |

1 edit | said by pog:I had thought Win7 automatically disabled defrag for SSD. Are you sure it was being defragged? It must have been being defragged. Under Task Scheduler, Defrag was one of the tasks listed. When I clicked on the task, it said to defrag every Wednesday at 1:00am. It told me the last time it defragged also, and that it was successful. I deleted the task.
Unless putting in the SSD, and then loading the OS disabled windows defrag and the Scheduler thought the task was successful, but it really never defragged, if what you said is correct. But that seems unlikely.
That's why I want to look at the log that will tell me for sure. -- Somebody's Back In Town |

| Open up the defrag utility (can just type "Disk Defragmenter" in the search box). The GUI will list every drive you have.

The task is scheduled but the utility itself knows what to defrag. SSD by default do not get defragged. At least, in my case this has been true.
edit for clarity: 1) defragmenter runs via scheduled task 2) defragmenter defrags eligible drives 3) ssd is not (normally) an eligible drive 4) defragmenter closes 5) task manager reports that defragmenter was run at a such and such time

| You are 100% correct. Even though the Task Scheduler says that Defrag has run successfully, the actual program shows that it has never run. I turned it off after doing this print screen. Strange. -- Somebody's Back In Town |

If you're obsessing over it, you can see if the Crucial m4 supports ATA general log area 0x04 which should contain some indication (calculated internally by the drive) of actual "endurance". Example from an Intel 320-series device:
Device Statistics (GP Log 0x04)

See page 7 above.
Since you have a Crucial m4, I would recommend you be much more concerned about this catastrophic data loss firmware bug over things like defragging. Upgrade your firmware ASAP.

| Thank you for that info.....I will talk with Crucial on Monday and see how to do the firmware update. I want to make sure that I don't already have the update, and I've never done a firmware update on an SSD.......
However, do you know of a link that explains it all, so I can check if I have the newest firmware, and if not, how to update it? -- Somebody's Back In Town |

2 edits | reply to koitsu How do I know if I have a 7mm SSD or a 9.5mm SSD, so I know which firmware update to use on their site? The SSD is in a Sony VAIO laptop.
I found that it is a 9.5mm
I found the firmware, and this is a pretty new laptop, and it says not to use the new firmware update if you have an SAS Expander. I don't know if my laptop has this. -- Somebody's Back In Town |

You absolutely do not have a SAS expander since your drive is used inside of a laptop and you have no external connectivity + no RAID in use. I am absolutely 100% positively certain of it. -- Making life hard for others since 1977. I speak for myself and not my employer/affiliates of my employer. |

1 edit | reply to lordpuffer I think another way to see do you have a SAS controller of any thing. Just go to your Device Manager.
run, devmgmt.msc or right click on the computer icon, on the left click "Device Manager"
Look under "Storage Controllers" if there is SAS
Exp:
There is a very high chance you dont have any SAS.

| reply to lordpuffer I successfully updated the firmware for the SSD on my own. It was pretty clear how to do it on Crucial's site. If you need to do it, and have a Crucial SSD, go to »www.crucial.com/support/ssd/inde···urce=web and first click on "Guide" before you start the process. The "Guide" is in many languages.
The only problem I ran into is that you have to download the firmware and then burn a CD with the .iso file on it. I am running Win 7 Pro, and I first made the mistake of just copying the whole file to my CD. It would not, of course, boot up from the CD to install the firware.
I then remembered that you have to use Windows to burn an .iso file to the CD. So I right-clicked on the file, clicked on open, and burned the .iso file. Everything went smooth from then.
Thank you all for your help. -- Somebody's Back In Town |
