| Re: [F@H] dual cpu xenon help You would typically use SMP2 to run one client with all cores. Nor sure the OS you are running . . . LINUX?
Maybe the real experts would point you to this page? »folding.stanford.edu/English/Dow···WinOther That must be where the SMP windows clients are.
I have always preferred a simple command line version that hides in the background.
Maybe I am way off with advice because I see you have a Helix spinner - so maybe there is something technical I missed? I've never ran on Xenon processors of any kind. --

Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | I'm running Xp on the system.. and I ran F@h before but I ended up stopping it for awhile.
Also I had the command line version on the 7 computers I used to run.
i just never tried it on a xenon nor with one with 4 cores |

| Cool! I put SMP on my Win7 eons ago when SMP became available, and I have not payed attention to the best answer, but the regular download page ( »folding.stanford.edu/English/Download ) did not tell me anything SMP. It would be a pain now too run 4 clients for 4 cores, SMP is better and likely does more science.
Windows: V6 Beta SMP2/CPU clients on »folding.stanford.edu/English/Dow···WinOther look like the way to go. Plenty will chime in here soon enough. --

| In the folder where you installed FAH, look for FAHlog.txt. Open that in notepad to check your progress. You can also install a third party app to monitor it.
I use HFM.net.
Check this forum on the FAH community site for info on 3rd party apps.

Ummmmm ... if you are seeing FAHlog.txt on your desktop, then you installed FAH on your desktop instead of in a separate folder. I wouldn't think that would be ideal.
When I install FAH, I always create a short-named folder (FAH) at the root of a drive. This makes a short path and keeps everything isolated. I install there. The path is then easy, such as C:\FAH or G:\FAH or whatever depending on which drive I choose. -- Join Team Helix * I am praying for these friends . |

| reply to Subaru Also, since you are running the SMP2 client, you should learn about passkeys, to maximize credit received for your work.

| reply to Subaru Unless you intervene, it will continue with FAHlog.txt for awhile. At some point it will rename FAHlog.txt to FAHlog-Prev.txt and continue with a new FAHlog.txt. Next time it creates and new FAHlog.txt, it will overwrite the previous FAHlog-Prev.txt and rename the (being) replaced FAHlog.txt to FAHlog-Prev.txt.
Clear as mud?
Of course, there are obsessive ones (not naming names here) who always check after a shutdown/startup of a FAH client to see if a FAHlog-Prev.txt has been created. If so such an obsessive one would rename FAHlog-Prev.txt to FAHlog-Prev-X.txt where "X" is the next number. This would be to keep FAHlog-Prev.txt from being overwritten. Over time this defies even the understanding of the obsessive one.

| can I move it in it's own folder without breaking anything? my guess is it happened because I had the exe on the desktop as I moved it over from the flashdrive.
I'm a bit curious what numbers it can do to make it worth my while to run it.
I don't think it will be as fast as my core 2 duo but I haven't run that in awhile and I stopped the gpu one because it killed my fan on my card I ended up having to take it apart and lube it with sewing machine oil.. been fine now for like 4 months. -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

1 edit | From what I gathered from the instructions from Stanford, the best way to install a client is to create a folder such as C:\FAH and copy the .exe to it then open it under admin privileges. Then do the configuring as noted with entering these flags under the advanced parameters, -svcstart -d C:\FAH -smp . These will get you big work units, if you wish, running as a service and using all cores of the CPU. I just make a short cut to desktop for the FAH log file to monitor the progress and delete any FAHlog-Prev.text that may show up. This way has worked very well for me but I am sure others may have a better system. Hope this makes sense.
Edit: This may help. »folding.stanford.edu/English/WinSMPGuide |

| reply to Subaru I don't know what client you installed or how your startup is configured. Some clients put the path in the registry, so you would have to change the path there and reboot.
I always install the command line version (no path to the client in the registry). Then I only need to change my shortcut info to point to the new location, stop the client (Ctrl-C), and restart the client from the new shortcut.
Note: I don't run FAH as a service. I have never allowed it to start up any other way than manual. That way I don't risk causing problems with it at startup because of something else.
Of course, some may call me overprotective as well as obsessive.

| That's what I run. Looking at my Windows 7 registry, as in earlier Windows versions, the only thing stored in the registry under PandeGroup and then Folding@Home is the machine ID.
So you can stop FAH, create a new folder, making sure you have permissions to that folder (don't forget to move the work folder to (nested within) your new FAH folder.
Then edit any shortcut you may have created to start FAH and start it up. If you have moved everything, you should be fine. -- Join Team Helix * I am praying for these friends . |

If the client is running four cores, (I assume two from each CPU), the log should read: [16:31:39] Mapping NT from 4 to 4. I have seen this on the first WU a client does, (new) so it may be normal.
Watch this and be sure when a new WU starts the log reads: Mapping NT from 4 to 4.
Being the second CPU is a physical CPU, (not just two more cores) I am wondering if the SMP client will treat it as two more, (cores) of the same physical CPU, or if a second client, and machine ID# might be needed to get it to fold.
I would think the client should see all CPUs, and treat them as one machine ID#, but I am not sure.
Welcome to Team Helix! -- Come fold for a cure with us @ Team Helix.
