Panda bears are no gift - will cost $10 million

Just in case anyone was thinking that these panda bears from China were being "gifted" to Canada for 10 years, think again.

The Toronto and Calgary zoos will be forking over $1 million a year to China ($10 million total) for this "gift". That's in addition to the millions that need to be spent to prepare their zoo habitat.

Google this: (sqrt(cos(x))*cos(200*x)+sqrt(abs(x))-0.7)*(4-x*x)^0.01, sqrt(9-x^2), -sqrt(9-x^2)

Or the increased ticket sales generated by the presence of the pandas at the zoos.

How rare are these things? There was one born in another country and it was all over their front page news.

Do we really need a zoo anyway in the modern day & age of the internet, plus with nature channels on TV?

They're a wonder from the past, IMO, and a financial drain on the city.

i agree...plus, i can't see how it would be nice to an animal in there to spend its entire life in a "cage".

Great trade, we'll ignore your human rights abuses, send you our raw materials/resources/jobs, and you get to send us back finished goods.

Yeah BILLIONS of increased trade, all at the determent of Canadians.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

We are in no position to criticize China over labor abuses when we have migrant workers in our farms living in the dead of winter in semi-heatless shacks and going to the washroom in -15 weather in portable plastic toilets because their shacks do not have inside toilets, or the fact that they are prohibited from even going for a stroll to the local town.

How about the abuses in Toronto bakeries and might I dare say Tim Horton's? Do you guys know what are the work rules at Tim Horton's? If you do you would think you are working in a chinese factory.

There is no comparing seeing them on television or the Internet versus right in front of you in the flresh. I love the zoo, and I'd be very upset if they closed it.

There are few pandas still in the wild of china. Majority are in zoos now. So yes, they are a rare animal.

Modern zoos don't cage animals, they wander free in a habitat that is made as natural as possible and probably have a relatively comfortable existence. One of the nicer things I've seen are the private sleeping areas where the animal can go not just to sleep, but to get away from gawkers during zoo hours if it feels like it. The first time I saw a natural zoo was in San Diego which I think was one of the zoos that pioneered the concept, but the Toronto Zoo is much the same.

In a just world, you would someday visit east Africa and be eaten by a ravenous Hamadryas baboon. Yummy and tender ... mmmmmm!

I don't know about now, but the first time I saw a panda it was in a zoo in Shanghai. It definitely was a pretty small enclosure (and If I'm remembering correctly it was a cage). It may be that the zoos in China have improved since then.

If that's the case, then I'm guessing the situation in China isn't as bad as you suggest since those I know that worked at Tim Horton's, they enjoyed their jobs.

Seriously though, China is flexing its economic muscle. It knows that western nations are desperate as their manufacturing economies are crumbling and govt debts climbing.

China regards the lending of Pandas to be a big "koodos" to a country. So while we may kid about the cost of having them, China regards this offering as a coveted privilege. Not every country gets pandas.

While I would never compare what goes on at Tim Hortons to the abuses that exist in China, I've come across enough people who have worked there who've conveyed what a terrible place it is to work. Then again, I would imagine all fast food-type places are the same, so it's not as if Tim Hortons is some kind of monster.
