yoyomhz join:2003-02-15 Beverly Hills, CA | A 'Bright spot' in the economy (a prison south of Penticton) People in osoyoos are celebrating. While small businesses close up, and costs for everything keeps going up, now Osoyoos, BC is getting a big boost to the economy - a brand new prison.
Yes. BC is happy. YAY! Jobs. That is the one bright spot in the economy - a prison.
Osoyoos Indian Band Chief Clarence Louie made the historic announcement Monday that the OIB Senulkemen Enterprise Park near Oliver had been selected by the provincial government as the site for a new $200-million correctional facility. The facility is expected to create 1,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction and 250 full-time positions once open.

yoyomhz join:2003-02-15 Beverly Hills, CA | I can't afford to take the ferry to victoria anymore because the cost keeps going up.
I cut back on spending money on gas and hardly go anywhere anymore.
Food seems ot cost a fortune. Heating is going up. Electricity is going up five percent a year. and taxes keep going up. Insurance for my vehicle went up. My income went down.
I wonder if I could get a job at the prison? I wonder if it will boost our economy - having a prison in the valley?
I wonder if I should be celebrating the great benefits this new project will bring to the area in southern BC where I live?
yay?

. Don't worry, HST and tax cuts will take care of all that. -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake....... |

 | Now we need to figure out which laws to tighten and where to focus our police resources in order to turn law-abiding citizens into inmates! |

 | reply to yoyomhz More prisons........ The Harper Government(TM) Economic Action Plan.
More prisoners, producing goods @ $0.17/hour, will enable Canada's US-owned corporations to repatriate jobs from Mexico, and Indiana ( see Caterpillar). |

| Has there been any opposition to the location of that BC prison ?
When Intrawest invested to redevelop Mont Tremblant in Québec, they also arranged for the small airport at La Macazza to be redevelloped. This used to be an air force/army base and one of 2 locations in Canada that housed the nuclear "BOMARC" missiles under Diefenbaker.
The former army base was converted to a prison.
Tremblant did not want its guests/passengers to have to pass in front of the prison facility when traveling between airport and the resort, so they had a totally new road travel the other way around the runway because they felt a prison would scare away tourists (especually weathy ones with their private jets).
Was there any similar reaction in BC to that new prison ? |
