| Best X86 router distribution? I had Zeroshell/mlppp, but don't need the MLPPP portion anymore.
What is the best free distrib that has WEB access? I don't mine going telnet for few time, but prefer having a web interface for most operation I do.
The only feature I really want is QOS.
Is Pfense a good distrib? Something better? I want to get a free distrib as I will eventually buy a new router anyway. -- Connection: ElectronicBox 60mbps / 3mbps Globaltuners.com Remotely controlled Radio scanner

- runs on really old garbage computers - awesome web interface - very customizable if you want (file system mounted read/write by default). - packages give it the features of many enterprise grade firewalls |

I found another distrib that seem great: Clearos, but have no clue if it's really good. |

Edit - ah, pfsense is a fork of m0n0wall for full hardware. Didn't know that. Having said that, I've run m0n0 on full hardware without issue. |

I have something kicking around and I just bought a couple of Gig cards to start working on something like this. |

 | OpenWRT is also a good idea and there is a web interface if you choose to use one. |
|
1 edit | Is there a x86 version of openWRT ? I know that its made for the ARM based platform.
DD-WRT is a spinoff of openWRT.
I think that openWRT is more for the hardcore linux users. |

vitesse join:2002-12-17 Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, QC | reply to vitesse Yes I think OpenWRT is available for X86. I already tried it for my old WRT54GL. Was slow as hell compare to Tomato and DDwrt. Maybe I made something wrong.
I saw many people talking about Astaro, this could be a great idea. |

| reply to vitesse I prefer pfsense over smoothwall for a couple of issues I had with smoothwall's "add-ons". Although I never tried QOS in Smoothwall (at the time I didn't require it), pfsense does it great. -- ~ Project Hope ~ |

 | Pfsense is great. the only problem with my setup is that I need "DHCP+PPTP". Its suppose to be in the sept. build and I have the dec. 13 build and still dosent work.. to bad |

 | Yes as servers not client. I get a static ip from my isp after getting a dynamic one over dhcp. Hence the need for "dhcp+pptp".
Thats what they called it in the forums. |

I think that openWRT is more for the hardcore linux users. Yes, it works quite well on the x86 platform. They even ported older versions of OpenWRT/MLPPP to it, but not the newest one (full of bugfixes).
