Best X86 router distribution?

I had Zeroshell/mlppp, but don't need the MLPPP portion anymore.

What is the best free distrib that has WEB access? I don't mine going telnet for few time, but prefer having a web interface for most operation I do.

The only feature I really want is QOS.

Is Pfense a good distrib? Something better? I want to get a free distrib as I will eventually buy a new router anyway.

i 3 pfsense.

- runs on really old garbage computers
- awesome web interface
- very customizable if you want (file system mounted read/write by default).
- packages give it the features of many enterprise grade firewalls

That's great I may give pfense a try.

I found another distrib that seem great: Clearos, but have no clue if it's really good.

pfsense is okay, but it takes some setting up initially to get things locked down... i've used smoothwall for years, and for a cheap install-and-go router, it does the job quite nicely. there's also ipcop, but i've never used it. all of these support QoS.

Is m0n0wall still around? I've had fairly good luck with that on various x86 hardware, including a Firebox that we was out of support and we couldn't get the stock firmware back onto no matter how hard we tried.

Edit - ah, pfsense is a fork of m0n0wall for full hardware. Didn't know that. Having said that, I've run m0n0 on full hardware without issue.

Any updates on what you went with? I'm actually looking into this right now as well... I have something kicking around and I just bought a couple of Gig cards to start working on something like this.

For mes router, je prefer avoir config files que I download/upload et peux éditer on a computer et avoir a backup.

OpenWRT is also a good idea and there is a web interface if you choose to use one.

Is there a x86 version of openWRT ? I know that its made for the ARM based platform.

DD-WRT is a spinoff of openWRT.

I think that openWRT is more for the hardcore linux users.

Yes I think OpenWRT is available for X86. I already tried it for my old WRT54GL. Was slow as hell compare to Tomato and DDwrt. Maybe I made something wrong.

I saw many people talking about Astaro, this could be a great idea.

I prefer pfsense over smoothwall for a couple of issues I had with smoothwall's "add-ons".
Although I never tried QOS in Smoothwall (at the time I didn't require it), pfsense does it great.

Pfsense is great. the only problem with my setup is that I need "DHCP+PPTP". Its suppose to be in the sept. build and I have the dec. 13 build and still dosent work.. to bad

If that's the case, does it support OpenVPN?

I'm watching District 9 again, and I've come to realize something: Wikus's got it all wrong. If I were morphing into a 9 foot tall hyper-dextrous alien that can shoot lightning bolts and get high off cat food why would I ever want to become human again?

Yes as servers not client. I get a static ip from my isp after getting a dynamic one over dhcp. Hence the need for "dhcp+pptp".

Thats what they called it in the forums.

I wish

IMO, openVPN is superior to pptp. Only my 0,02$

Yes, it works quite well on the x86 platform. They even ported older versions of OpenWRT/MLPPP to it, but not the newest one (full of bugfixes).

And yeah, it is more for hardcore Linux users, tyvm
