 | Fast Layer 2 ADSL2 Modem Hey all. I'm curious if there is a "no-bullshit" ADSL2/2+ modem I can use, which doesn't have an interface, fancy configuration, or anything like that. I have a WRT54G currently doing my PPPoE to AT&T, but my modem is ancient and is causing performance issues, especially under a high number of connections (why is a modem stateful?) or a high number of PPS.
Does anyone have any suggestions along this line? I don't really have a price range, it can be as expensive as needed. |

The Zyxel 660 is a good basic modem, and they run for a long time. I like the Netgear DM111P, but all the pre-owned ones I've bought started failing within a year.
Are you sure it is the modem, and not the router, that is causing the performance issues? |

 | Thanks for the reply. I looked into the Zyxel. It apparently has stateful packet inspection, QoS, and DoS protection. The Linksys seems similarly overcomplicated.
I understand all this stuff can just be ditched... but why get it in the first place if I'm just going to ditch it? Isn't there at least someone who has built a modem solely focused on just being, well, a modem?
When I buy a switch, I don't want it to have BGP, a firewall, or a VPN. Do one thing, and do it good.
Btw, I'm sure the router is not the issue, it's not even breaking a sweat, and I've replaced it with extremely fast Juniper routers to ensure that was not the issue; it isn't.
Thanks again. |

| reply to djahandarie I have in the past used a Zoom 5615 modem with AT&T service. It is an ADSL2(+) bridge modem, but it does have both an html and a telnet interface for setup and status display, so perhaps that might disqualify it under your no interface requirement. -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D.
