 | How to test connectivity?? I recently got upgraded from 7 Mbps to 15 Mbps (upgraded gateway from Westell 327W to Actiontec GT704-WGB; am ex-GTE Calif so connect via DHCP). I get 14.7 Mbps when I run speedtest.net so I am quite happy on that score.
BUT, it seems that now when I download using either IE8 or Firefox the download drops out partway through. I was downloading a Linux ISO file the other day and had to restart about 5 times. When I tried to download the file via FTP using FileZilla it stopped and restarted partway through after reporting "Transfer connection interrupted: ECONNABORTED - Connection aborted."
How do I troubleshoot this issue? Is it something in my new gateway/router [Actiontec GT704-WGB] or is it the line itself (meaning maybe something at the local Verizon substation or maybe in the lines from the substation to my place)? Is there some way to test each separately to isolate the problem? |

1 edit | i recently discovered intermittent connectivity, and used this tool to document how often it was occurring, and when it finally was fixed by Verizion. »www.softpedia.com/get/Network-To···ph.shtml to be most effective, choose the IP address of your third hop, which is router of your subnet at the CO, but if you don't understand that, just use yahoo.com which is pingable and very available.
i would set the ping frequency to 10 seconds, and capture to JPG files the history as this program runs. keep in mind it will also reflect any ISP using programs you have running, so best to minimize their use or run this history test overnight while you sleep. if you not sure your PC may have agents running that use your bandwidth, try rebooting in safe mode and running this pinggraph, that should help insure it's the only ISP user working. if you can, disable wireless internet on your router, and only use a wired connection - as that will be a more fair test of what your ISP may be providing.
consider trying a different download manager. a good one should be able to pick up where it got lost, and not require you to keep restarting the same file. |

Ping testing wasn't necessary. I have determined my new modem (ActionTec GT704-WGB) is the problem. I replaced it with my older Westell 327W and my connectivity problem went away! Could be a bad unit. Verizon is sending a replacement. |

Using my old Westell 2200 and a separate router much more stable. ActionTec FW also leaves a lot to be desired. |

I wonder if I could improve reliability by setting up the ActionTec GT-704 to work as just a modem (some kind of bridge mode) and then use my older Westell to do wireless and wired routing downstream. The GT-704 has much faster throughput then my old Westell 327W, although the peak speeds are similar.
I think maybe one reason for the problems with the GT-704 is it is supposed to have a ridiculously small NAT table. If I understand correctly, the NAT table keeps track of half-open connections, which might be anywhere from 20-50 at a time. But, the NAT table seems to only allow 13 entries at a time. |
