[OS X] iTunes on a OSX question....

Greetings

Lookng to make the jump from Windowz to an iMac.

I have been going through all the applications I use day to day on the windows box and I have a question regarding iTunes on the MAC/OSX.

Itunes on Windowz has this nasty habit of duplicating tracks for no apparent reason. Happens often and looking around the interwebs - it happens to alot of folks. There are even windowz tools to clean it up.

Does this feature/issue crop up on OSX?

By "duplicating tracks," I assume you mean that library management has been turned on. Before you import tracks into your library, make sure you go into the preferences, make sure that you have both options unchecked.

I've never know iTunes to duplicate tracks on its own. The only duplicates I've had were entirely my doing.

Sorry, in MY experience, running iTunes on OS X, it has never duplicated tracks on its own.

I'm just curious......I myself have 2 Macs and have never come across any duplicate tracks.

However, if you do, as posted above, they are easy to remove. I wouldn't let that stop you from making the jump. I still have a laptop PC that I use for certain functions, but my every day computing is on one of my iMacs, and I never thought of looking back.

Scanning those links they all seem to talk about the duplicates occurring due to errors in how iTunes is used... not that iTunes has a problem. Perhaps I misunderstand you.

Short answer...yes.

One thing you can try...if you subscribe to iTunes Match..it will NOT match duplicate songs. So under "View" and "View Option" select Cloud Status, then highlight Cloud Status in iTunes, scroll down till you see "Duplicate" and have fun deleting.

If you find a decent program that actually works, let me know. My system is still messed up having different units (Windows previously) and now on the MacBook. So we're talking about 7 years of iTunes hell and in some cases, 4 or 5 copies of same song....but occasionally those songs are *different*..example, I have 4 *different* copies of Metallica's "Fade to Black"...

Sounds like my library....

Must be user error - cant be anything wrong with iTunes if you believe what you read here.....

It's much more likely that iTunes was coded to randomly duplicate your songs to mess with your mind, rather than some people just have trouble working with the somewhat confusing way iTunes tries to manage Music by default...

I've had over 8K songs (now at 14K) in iTunes since it was released. I've had maybe 2-3 albums worth of duplicates over that period, which was because I tried to add music I already had and iTunes wasn't able to figure out the songs were the same.

If you like to manage your own music, you just need to setup iTunes appropriately from the beginning (before adding any music). There shouldn't be any reason duplicates pop up on their own.

I'm not trying to prove anyone wrong here. I'm simply pointing out that while you said there are reports about iTunes duplicating songs and not through incorrect use of the software, the links you provided merely showed people having duplicates because they didn't do something correctly. Believe me, I hate iTunes for the bloated piece of crap that it is but I don't have any duplicate issues unless I do something wrong. If you have some links to info showing where iTunes just randomly duplicates things please share. I'd be interested. You said you did further up.

The post above mine is a good one.

From what I can pull together from the answers here - folks on OSX dont seem to have issues with duplicate tracks - those on windows seem plagued by it.

Thanks for all the responses - I am gonna like OSX

Now I'm curious. I have Windows and honestly, never had an issue. I'm wondering what situations cause the problem you mention. I guess I'll worry about it if it ever happens. 26,000+ songs, 700 movies... all seems well.
