What can cause a splitter to just... go bad?

What can cause a splitter to just... go bad?

I've had my setup for almost a year and the cable modem wasn't getting a lot of Uncorrectables. Forwards to a couple of weeks ago and the modem was getting a ton of them. 10 days uptime and it already had over 5000 Uncorrectables.

I had a technician come out from the Signature Home support group and he tested some things. He determined that the splitter right before the cable modem went bad. After replacing it I've not had one Uncorrectable, lots of Correctables, but those aren't anything to worry about.

Mind you, nothing changed inside the house since the completely new install (complete with all new wiring) that was done a year ago.

Here's the stats.

Output of the table above was formatted with my Greasemonkey Script so that's why it doesn't look like other SBG6580 stat tables.

But aren't these things simple devices with barely anything in them?

They have delicate electronics inside.

Cheap ones have close to nothing, more expensive ones have a small circuit board with precision components.

If it's important, back it up... twice. Even 99.999% availability isn't enough sometimes.
