 | Online surveillance bill will put an electronic prisoners ...bracelet on every Canadian"
The Conservative government has called its controversial new electronic surveillance bill the Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act as it attempts to win support for the planned laws that would give authorities unprecedented new powers to monitor the online and phone habits of Canadians.
The so-called lawful access legislation, tabled in the House of Commons Tuesday, will require Internet service providers and cellphone companies to hand over basic customer information including name, address, phone number, email address, and ISP addresses to authorities when requested, without the need for a warrant.
Dubbed online spying by critics, the bill is also expected to require ISPs and phone companies to install equipment for real-time surveillance and create new police powers designed to obtain access to the surveillance data.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. |

You know, start with a subset of the population, specifically all elected officials and government employees. That should keep them adequately busy until they get a chance to reconsider whether they really want to do this. -- Regards, Joseph V. Morris |

And we should worry about Google? Given the choice, the Government or Google, I'd rather give my information to Google. At least they would be (somewhat) ethical with it. |

I'd like to see legislators fined (or better yet, thrown out of office) every time they come up with a misleading title for a bill. Truth in advertising should apply to them too ... |

I'd like to see legislators fined (or better yet, thrown out of office) every time they come up with a misleading title for a bill. Truth in advertising should apply to them too ... And really, is the whole "internet predator" thing as big of a problem as they would like us to believe? I'd bet it's probably a lot less of a problem that many other types of crimes.
Drugs, vandalism, violence, abuse, and the occasional murder, do show up in the paper fairly regularly, but "internet predator" type crimes however, I can't remember the last time I've seen that in the paper. |

KearnstdElf WizardPremium join:2002-01-22 Mullica Hill, NJ | reply to Sindows 7 I predict with bills like this in Canada and PIPA in the US that they will in no way impact the advertised thing they are claiming to fight.
the pushers and creators of child porn are crafty and generally not as dumb as they seem. they will use encryption and even sneakernet(Windowless Van-net?) if needed. The only thing that puts the people who create this stuff into a prison is what is already putting them in prison. Good old fashioned police work.
In fact these bills will make life harder on Cops putting themselves through the mental stress of having to view this material because it will drive the criminals deeper into the darknets.
I know lawmakers in the US and Canada are simply using children to sell these to the public of course. |
