Re: [Parts Check] 850 watt PSU

Depending on your system specs, I would hesitate to say yes, since the 7950's draw 280W under load each. That's 560W just for the graphics cards, so it depends on what else you are running.

A quick search claims that AMD recommends 700W for a 7950 in crossfire config (Toms Hardware, Guru3D). 4 PCI-E connectors with 46A+ on the 12V rail.

From what I found on the AMD website, they only list the single card recommendation of 500W.

The XFX 850W puts out 70A on the 12V rail.

Depending upon the rest of your system, 850W may or may not cut it.

For starters, you have to interpret the information correctly. 1025w is the input power and since the unit is not 100% efficient, as shown by the report, the output power is only 851w which to XFX's credit, is not all that bad (83% efficiency). However, I very much doubt the unit can sustain this type of output for long before either bursting into flames or just shut itself off (the latter is the likely outcome).

This might sound a bit deja vu but here it is again. Don't crossfire or SLI low-end or mid-range cards. Aim for single high-end SKUs. I am not telling you to jump out and get a 7970/6990 or 590/580. Consider cards like the 7950, 570. If you crossfire or SLI these cards, I believe you getting an ultra high-end PSU is justified but getting a kw PSU to crossfire 5770? Don't be ridiculous. You pay extra for a big PSU, it sucks up more power, it generates more heat, it generates more noise and for what? You get the performance of a 580 IF the game is optimized for crossfire/SLI? A single 7970/580 can be powered by a good 500w.

This needs to be repeated by the OP for hours on end/ad nauseum. Then maybe it will sink in.

A 500w PSU should have no problems powering two 5770s.

could one run a pair of 7950 GPU's on it with out trouble?

I thought you had no money. Where are you getting $1000 for GPUs?

I wonder why kyle told me to go with that one?
you know who kyle is don't you.

you were name dropping, so I looked it up:

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HardOCP
Based on the wiki, I'd rather trust JohnnyGuru and its benchmarks over a website that claims to base its reviews on the non-scientific "end-user experience." However, HardOCP's reviews look like any other site's, with FPS graphs/etc.

So I don't really get it. Bill Clinton could tell you to invest money in underwater cellists, and it wouldn't mean you should.

Instead of dropping names and simply taking a referral, I'd rather look at the relevant PSU reviews and choose one based on my (real) needs, my budget, and then go out and buy the best PSU that fits those two criteria.

A REAL power supply review is based upon tests done with very expensive, commerical equipment that properly and dynamically loads the unit, and tests its output wave. I should think by now the OP should know this, though, so I am just saying it as an FYI for those that haven't done the legwork.

Indeed, I thought he kept saying he couldn't afford the right hardware advised to him only weeks ago? Lottery? Congrats!

I just bought the Antec "green" psu I got tired of running a single 5770.
I am going to hold some cash back and get a xfx 850 pro PSU.

I also got a TV tuner. »www.amazon.com/Hauppauge ··· -2-fkmr0

Then my sb6120 cable modem started acting weird . Buying a cisco DPC 3010 from COX. I have been spending money like a drunk sailor this sucks.

it only cost me $50. I can also put it in another system of mine. At $50 it was a steal.

Exactly! You can give a man some wisdom but you make them think. They decide what and how it works for them even if it's in opposition to what they should be doing.

Never used Corsair PSU's but I have NEVER had an OCZ PSU go out, yet. I have a 600w I got in 06 still running.
