[IL] No discount on package for CableCard Users?

I called today to renew my promo contract for another year. In the process, the rep mentioned that my plan includes a digital box, so i could have one for free if i wanted. I have 2 cable cards, so I asked if one of those could be the free item, but she said no, I get billed for the "Free" digital box whether I have one or not.

So I've been paying for a digital box I don't have or use, but didn't know it since it isn't itemized on my bill. And then paying 2x $1.99 cable card fees on top of that.

I thought I remembered the FCC saying that a cable company had to take the price of the cable box rental off of a package if a subscriber used cable cards instead, but didn't have it in front of me at the time. I just looked it up, and sure enough, that's pretty much exactly what the FCC cablecard faq page shows:

"Pay only for equipment you have. Your operator must give you a discount on any packages that include the price of a set-top box if you choose to use your own CableCARD-enabled device. FCC Rule 76.1205(b)(5)."

Is this just a case of an ignorant rep, or is mediacom's policy not in line with FCC Rules?

If you want the promo deal you need to get a dct even if its not connected. Just store it somewhere util your promo expires. Cable cards are never discounted. You dont have to get the dct but youll pay more.

The bottom line is if you want the savings you need to get a dct.

Re: [Cable TV] Cablecard pickup at office

So, you're saying that the rep was correct, and Mediacom does not abide by the FCC Rules on the matter?

I interpret what Anonymous is saying is that you are already getting your discount by the Promo contract rate. That you are already not being charged for a STB, because that box is considered free in this particular promotion. That Mediacom interprets the FCC regulation as not requiring them to give you a discount on top of the discount you are already getting. No "double coupons" so to speak. Any one of these are possible interpretations to what is happening.

I understand that interpretation, but reading the fcc faq page I linked to on this subject, it seems pretty clear that if the package price includes a STB, the company has to discount that package price for customers who don't take a STB and use cablecards instead.

Aurock, if you wouldn't mind sending me your account number or the phone number that is listed on it, I'd like to look a little further into this for you. There shouldn't be a reason that we can't package the offer with a CableCARD instead of a digital converter. Most of the time, the offer can be modified to include whatever equipment you would like. While it's true that a digital package plan requires equipment, there is nothing that states this HAS to be a dct. Send me your info and I'll see what's up and do what I can.

It does look like you may have a case, although I am not sure that a renewal of a previous contract might still present them with a loop-hole on a grandfathered contract. I would suggest you do as MediacomChad now suggests, and provide him privately the information he needs so he can work this up through their channels. MediacomChad is one of the "good guys," so if something is possible, he is likely a person who can help you.

Well, chad says he was able to get the cable card added into the package instead of the digital box. I'll watch for next month's bill, but it sounds like that's exactly what I would expect.

Thanks!

Hey Aurock we live in same town Silvis. I been thinking lately too of cablecard option since the one is now $199 or less. How do you like your cards which ones you have and everything works fine huh.

That was my biggest fear dealing with local mediacom on getting cable card. These are the same people that told me when I paid my bill week early by date on the actual bill that I was late and now owed them $10 late fee. Unreal, but yea mediacomchad is the man he straightened that out for me when the local office was to utterly clueless or could care less to see how was it my fault the bill you sent said that date and by that date I paid early.

I've had awful luck with mediacom in regards to cable and phone which is why i only have net now. Wish I could get some package deal but every time I try they tell me some insane number per month. Same way I got screwed into paying $55 a month for internet, when 30 days later they're giving it out to everyone for $19.99.

Sorry for rant but love to know how your cable card/mediacom experience is going.

when you bundle your services they will be discounted so your equipment and service fees will total your advertised price. so a dct may cost $3 and starz $1.95. they can substitute a dct with a card but they can charge you more for it or add up the price difference somewhere else. your total should be the same so it ends up something like $89.99/mo.
