Re: CAPS LOCK key = securing log in...

It's a bigger problem on the newer hardware that does not have a light on to indicate the caps lock status. You have to be logged in to see the on-screen status.

I -hate- the keyboards that don't have the light. That is almost always the first question I ask when passwords/passcodes/security issues are in play and when there is no light the only thing I can have them do is hit 'caps lock' and try again just in case it was on. If the keyboard software isn't installed on the system, there is often no display on the monitor either.

Re: CAPS LOCK key = securing log ins...

I wish they would move the caps lock key next to number lock and scroll lock keys where it cannot do any damage. In the meantime, I activate the beep when the caps lock key is accidentally hit.

Fortunately CAPSLOCK can be seen at some applications level.
Took me awhile to figure out what that light was about.
I was like "what the heck did I now?" but I've come to appreciate it.

I agree with this, it has no reason really to be where it is. because normal writing one only needs the shift key as rarely does a typical person ever need to write whole words in caps.

nore do I try to be, I tend to see capslock location as a legacy holdback to the typewriter. People would resist it being relocated but if a big OEM like Dell did it I bet people would adapt.

Interesting enough my Logitech drivers allow me to disable caps along with the windows key. but that is mostly for gaming.

I've done a solution that is permanent until the windows os is reinstalled/imaged to a previous date before the change, disable the caps lock key entirely in the operating system.

Hmmm... could've used it right there.

My Logitech wireless keyboard doesn't even have a num lock, or scroll lock key. The number pad always acts as a number pad, and is just more legacy abandoned. I still have a standard keyboard I can connect if needed as backup for the wireless keyboard, and it has those legacy keys still. Logitech has slowly been removing useless keys, like the newer windows menu key also got remapped to a multi-function key for how little people really use that key, but they did leave the windows key on the keyboard which I have also disabled as I loathe to hit that by accident when I'm running something like a game.

It'd be a waste of time to use the caps lock key just to type out OEM. A key that changes to bold fonts would be better than a caps lock in this day and age.

I am in a database class in college. I use caps all the time for homework / projects, etc.

Why everything in database must be typed in caps I have yet to figure out.

Just another syntax convention.

I'm a large proponent of using all capitals for reserved words and other language keywords...

For example:

SELECT schema.table.field
FROM schema.table
WHERE table.field_two > 0

Very legible.

No, actually, it wouldn't [be a waste of time]. Using CAPS LOCK (if you're a touch-typist):
1 char - definitely not
2 char - probably not
3 char - probably
4 or more char - definitely
(If you're not a touch-typist, well... I suppose it hardly matters where the keys are.)

"this day and age" <--funny

A special key for bold wouldn't be all that useful, especially here--where you have to enter the HTML code for bold, italics, etc.

our instructor requires all caps for pretty much everything. If you don't you lose points. The book also shows examples and such in all caps.

getting off topic a bit though.

Here's an easy way to disable the Caps Lock key:
Paste the following into notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00

File > Save As...
Select for Save as type: All Files
Enter in the File name field: disable_caps_lock.reg
Click Save
Right click on the created file > Merge
Restart your system

In the case that you want to enable CAPS LOCK again, you need to delete that registry entry, so you need follow these steps:
Press WinKey+R > type regedit and press Enter
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
Right click on the Scancode Map > Delete
Restart your system
