1 edit | [DVR] DCT6412 Motorola DVR How does "audio optimize" Am using wireless headphones with Motorola DCT6412 DVR Set Top Box . Have had difficulty with "stereo audio output" (RCA jacks on rear of STB box) changing the prior level or going away by itself ! Until I figured it out was assuming that headphone transmitter/audio box had failed !!
Tried looking it up in Motorola DCT 6412 manual (no help).
Have tried "Comcast Chat Line" no help except to say that "optimize" tab under [Audio setup/ mono _ stereo selection] does set default level for that channel . They did not answer my question "do Comcast STB updates reset the audio output to some default/off level".
Have found out by "dumb luck" that selecting the "optimize" tab (underneath the mono/stereo selection tab) apparently resets it to a level that puts it at an acceptable level for the headphone amplifier input. The stereo output jack signal (back of STB) is apparently independent of the output level carried over the HDMI cable to the TV. You can turn the audio volume for the TV down on either the TV or the STB remote without affecting the output on the back panel RCA jacks.
Note: Wireless headphones typically turn off the output to the headphones if the audio input signal to its amplifier drops below a certain level (ie a "no audio/open circuit "noise" situation).

The various audio settings only affect the analog outputs (A/V or RF). The digital outputs (optical, coax, HDMI) are always passed on as-is.
To change the volume, you have to use the box's own volume up and down codes. Normally, the remote is set to send the TV or a separate amp's codes instead (Volume Lock). There is a remote sequence to disable Volume Lock if needed. |

| Either I'm misunderstanding the applicability of your response or you are not getting the "crux" of my problems. 1) The output level on the stereo RCA jacks on the back panel of the DCT6412 changes from a "working/satisfactory" level for the amplifier input in the wireless headphone transmitter unit causing it to interpret that as an "open/noise level" signal and shutting down the headphone audio. This happens even though the user has not changed anything !!!
2) There is no information available (that I can locate) in the Motorola/Comcast documentation that describes that this happens and what causes it to happen. Also spent about 20 minutes on line with a "Comcast Chat Line (tech?) with no additional info or apparent awareness on their part that this happens and affects anybody who is using those outputs for an additional device (like a wireless headphone amplifer or or another device like a home stereo amplifier.

You can make certain that you are not changing volume using the box's code. When you do, you will see a volume bar at the very top of the screen. When set to 'optimal', a little pointer appears and says 'STEREO'.
That said, the volume between channels can vary greatly. Currently, by me, the SD versions of several local channels are VERY LOUD. On the other hand, The Weather Channel is very quiet (and mono.) |

 | Don't understand this statement "You can make certain that you are not changing volume using the box's code" What do you mean the "box's code" ??
Thanks,

I think this could be a tad more general in an effort to make it more precise. Doesn't HDMI carry analog audio, also?
On a TV with HDMI input and no internal digital audio processor - and connected via HDMI to a Motorola DCX-3400 - the STB's guide settings for Compression, and Stereo vs. "TV Speakers", definitely have an immediate effect on what one hears on the speakers on my own Panasonic Viera TV. |

There's a volume control for your cable box, and (probably) one for your TV. In most cases, it's optimal behavior to lock your cable box's volume level at one set value, and use your television or receiver to adjust the volume in the room which hits your ears. (Obviously, if your TV can't have a remote control adjusting its volume, you don't have many choices.)
On multi-device remotes, such as the kind Comcast provides, each TV brand and model has a (5 digit?) "code" and instructions for "volume lock", whereby it makes sure that when you hit Volume up and Volume Down on your remote, that command leaves the cable box volume alone, and adjusts your TV's.
Andy was simply asking you to make sure you were not adjusting your cable box's volume. |

 | Thanks. Now I understand what he meant. I never do it that way . In any event the "audio output jack volume (rear of STB) are independent of the remote volume control and the TV volume control. Don't know about other Motorola STB's .

owlynPremium,MVM join:2004-06-05 Newtown, PA | reply to boontonflyer I have the RCA jacks on the back connected to an amp, and the levels never change. They are line level out, and your phones need something greater. You need a pre-amp for the phones. |

Now that I understand the situation I can monitor/resolve if I need to take any further action. I'm kind of curious when/why /if the "RCA jacks output" changes.
PS: Don't have a lot of room/space for another amplifier !

| The level shouldn't change. Headphone preamps are tiny. Here's some: »www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywor···z85xt5_b |
