 | MagicJack Difficulty Hello,
I am having a problem with my MJ (regular) & despite the hours I spent talking to their ridiculous customer care none of them were able to help fix the issue.
On Monday it was functioning ok...on Tuesday when I turned on my pc I noticed it didn't launch on Start Up even though the blue light was on. On double clicking the desktop icon this is what I see:

Does anyone know what could be wrong? I've only been using it for 2 months. |

Does anyone know what could be wrong? I've only been using it for 2 months. I have had this issue before as well. I'm not sure what really caused the issue but all I did was put the MJ in a different USB port and it worked. For some odd reason the first port I put it in didn't like to initialize it on a re-boot. Now it works after a re-boot.
So just try changing ports and see what happens. |
|
 | I tried this & it didn't work :/ |
|
 | I forgot to add that I inserted the MJ into another pc altogether, I was expecting the automatic set up...but it didn't happen. Is it ruined for life or what? Does it need formatting? |

| Thinking of a couple of things, and neither is good.
Since you have tried it in several USB ports and different computers, I fear the unit is punched.
Firstly, is the thing still in warranty? If it is, a chat with the MJ folks will be required to see about getting another one.
If it's NOT in warranty, you have nothing to lose in trying this. Open the package, and see if there is a problem with the USB connector in the dongle. They can break away from the board. If so, a fine soldering pencil & some solder can restore the connection. If that looks ok, sounds like something in the electronics went south. You can try warming or freezing the board, and see if it comes back for a bit. If it does, there's a problem with the dongle electronics. New dongle time.
Had a thumb drive do similar. That was how I succeeded on retrieving all my data before it went to never never land. |

 | Thank you for responding. I tried talking to their customer care service one last time yesterday. I let the tech access my pc remotely & she reached the conclusion that my device is defective.
So I'm going to take your advice & hand it to someone more tech savvier than I am to see if they can fix the usb connecter....I was just looking at my mj & I noticed the connecter is a bit slanted. I should assume that's the reason? |

| The fact that it wouldn't be recognized by 2 computers, and several different USB ports tells me there's a problem with the device, not the computer. The CS person had no real need to remotely connect to your machine.
I'm now assuming the unit is over a year old, so warranty is out of the question.
The board the connector is mounted to is pretty thin, and a good magnifying glass will be needed to see if the connection broke free.
Everything on that board uses SMT (surface mount technology), so the (hopeful) repair might get tricky. Give it a go. Nothing to lose. |

 | Actually I got it November 2011 so it's still within the warranty period..I just finished talking to them & they said they will replace it. |
|
1 edit | Perfect!! They should last a bit longer than that!!!
Leave it be and wait for the replacement to show up. It's pretty cozy in that little package, and you can bet they'll get snippy if it looks like you tampered with it. |
