Re: Saints, team officials involved in bounty program Maybe the 'bounty' thing is just a game to them. They get bored with stuff and gamble money to have a good time trying to see who can amass the most 'bounty' cash each season. They'd never admit this was the reason though since it would be a catastrophic fallout for the NFL. -- "Every once in a while, declare peace....it confuses the hell out of your enemies." |

| reply to capdjq I guess more reports are going to show the truth. Where is the money coming frmo though? From the Coach? From the Team? If it's from the team how does this not count towards the cap. Though it might not be as big as spygate it is still pretty bad. |

| reply to Rook008 said by Rook008:But to be honest, I don't see how players making tons of money already can be persuaded to make "bigger" hits on opposing players with a little cash. They're not persuaded. They're told that is what their coach wants. And just like every other think their coach wants, it's their job to do it or they lose their jobs. If even one player had gone to Gregg Williams and said "Coach Williams, this is wrong, I won't do it" he would have been benched, and cut as soon as it was practical. -- hey Dale |

| reply to capdjq There's a report by Peter King of a video of the Vikings/Saints playoff game. After a big hit on Favre some Saints player is screaming "I want my money!"
Gregg Williams should be banned from the league for a least a year, like Hornung and Karras were. During that year he should be sentenced to get a job for the Zeta drug cartel. "Hey guys, I do bounties!" I'm thinking he wouldn't be such a tough guy after a year. -- hey Dale |

•Williams - suspended for at least a season. •Players that can be shown to have participated (although the NFL seems to not require proof - allegations seem to be enough) - 4 games each •Coach - hefty fine... on the order of what Belichik got for spygate •Team - loss of draft pick(s)
And if the allegations prove true that Vilma offered up $10K for a game ending hit, he should receive a season long suspension and heavy fine.
Let's just see how true to his word Mr. Goodell is with respect to his concern for player safety. -- Shine on you crazy diamond... |

| reply to capdjq The players that participated in this are scum and are really hurting this image that they are the victims of the NFL thirst for blood. Between all polls of players saying a good deal would hide concussions and play anyways, now this fiasco... they just strengthened the leagues position and made it much more difficult to claim victim. |

| reply to fatness said by fatness:... They're not persuaded. ... I don't think that's the way it went down. If the defensive players were pressured to take out opposing players, and in fear of losing their jobs, one of them would have leaked the story long ago. The NFL Player's Association would have had their back, as would the League and the fans. I think it was just that the defensive players either went along or kept their mouths shut. -- "Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." - H. Anyone that saw what they did to Favre in the playoffs knows this. If you defend scumbags, then what does that make you? Winning is nice, but criminal thugs can always subvert an otherwise honest and honorable game. I hope Goodell knocks the bastards back down to the bottom where they belong-the bottom. I also hope it causes them personal distress. Conduct your life as an honest man and you won't have to deal with dishonest results. |

And really, it's the bottom line ---- this went on for years without anyone saying anything. Fear, intimidation, desire to fit it, wanting a few extra bucks --- I can't really find any good justification for what the players did.
And I can find even less for what Gregg Williams did. -- hey Dale |

| I hope the whole story comes out now that they're investigating. I mean, there had to be a bunch of people who knew about it.
I just hope it isn't the same as with "Spygate" where the NFL hands out punishments and then steps back with a "no comment, the tapes were destroyed" stance. -- "Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." - H. L. Mencken

| Yeah, same here. The NFL really damaged its own credibility by supposedly destroying the tapes after their quick, quiet spygate investigation.
The NFL and the Saints have to wonder if releasing all the information helps them or hurts them in future lawsuits by players. My feeling is that releasing it helps the NFL (they can say they jumped on the issue as soon as they knew and stopped the bounties) and hurts the Saints (because it'll show what they did). -- hey Dale |

| I think either full disclosure or a minimal release of information will really hurt the Saints as an organization because Sean Payton knew about it but did nothing to stop it.
The League can end up without too much loss if they're open about it. In any situation, Greg Williams is screwed, and rightfully so. -- "Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." - H. L. Mencken

| I'm not sure football has 'permanent ban' circumstances. Maybe they do. But baseball sure does.
Pete Rose does not belong in this discussion. Rose violated the A-#1 rule of baseball, by which violation he and everyone else in baseball knew exactly what the penalty would be if caught.
Williams went over the line in his aggressive desire to win. There's been no long-instated NFL policy spelling out exactly what the penalty should be for such actions. The NFL more or less makes up penalties for rule violations as they go.
And the only thing "stronger" than what Rose got would be criminal prosecution. |
