[DVR] Rate Increase

Just got an email saying DVR rate was going from $15.99 to $16.99. I guess this is one way to skirt not increasing rates during contracts since contracts don't apply to equipment.

Edit: and I notice if you still have the $12.99 rate that will increase to $16.99 as well.

Can you post the email that you got? I have not received it but if they are going to jack up the rates on the grandfathered prices then I am going to have to start looking at other options.

This is the best I can do right now, I'm on my iPad, so can't attach a screenshot. There is a table in there, so that part isn't going to display properly:

Dear Customer,

The best is yet to come. We are working right now to build a more exciting product, with even more TV channels in HD and new equipment in the home to allow you to view your favorite programs on all your screens.

We hope you understand that to continue to bring this level of programming and technology to you, from time to time we need to modify our rates. With this in mind, the rate below will go into effect on or after May 6, 2012.

Equipment (Set Top Box)Current Price*New Price

That was fine, I just wanted to see what they were saying. Looks like in my case I will either go with tivo or switch to DirecTV. There just no advantage if there going to jack up the rates on my box's and never add any new HD channels

Ya, I may switch out one of my DVRs (I have a multiroom and 2 others) for a regular STB. There are a couple times when I want to record 5 things at once, but it happens rarely. I'd save about $10/month after the swap and getting the bundle discount on boxes.

Need to let my first digital voice bill come first to see if everything looks correct before making anymore changes.

U would really jump ship for $1 more a month?

I wonder if there is a difference between a "promotional offer" $12.99 DVR and a grandfathered $12.99 DVR?

I have the latter and it was never a promo, it was the going rate at the time I got the DVR's.

No, but I will for $12 a month, I have 3 @ $12.99 and after paying to upgrade them and keep that rate it makes it even more painful.

EDIT: blue_trooper may be right, there could be a difference between the 2.

Hope you guys don't lose the price. I lost it when I added a 3rd DVR.

Even if the price stayed the same it would still be more expensive than owning several TiVos. If I had been using fiOS DVRs for the last 4.5 years instead of the four to six TiVos I used on FiOS during that time period, I would have spent much more money and not even owned the DVRs.

This has come up before. DVR is $192/year (at $15.99). TIVO cost from FIOS is $48. So you have to do the math on when does TIVO cost become less that FIOS.
Looking at Best Buy, cheapest TIVO is $99 + $499 for lifetime guide. So you break even in 4.25 years. And that assumes no issues with unit.

My break even point was much, much less than that. You also have to factor owning the TiVos since you can sell them. I started off FiOS in 2007 with several Series 3 lifetime boxes. When the Premiere came out I sold my S3 lifetime boxes which covered around 80% of the cost of my Premieres with Lifetime service. And then when the four tuner Elite came out, I sold two of my Lifetime Premieres which covered more than 100% of the cost of the Elite with Lifetime. Plus I was able to drop a cable card, saving $4 a month. My breakeven point was now where near 4.25 years, not even 2.25 years.

You also have to factor in the value to the customer for certain features over the Tivo. For example, I use Video on Demand A LOT. Since I am subscribed to Ultimate HD package and have all the premium movie channels, I use the video on demand for HBO/Starz/Cinemax etc. more than I DVR the shows. At the very least I need to subscribe to a Verizon Set-top box to keep those features which although entirely doable, I just don't want to be bothered with it.

If it works out, given your family usage patterns, you can go down to one DVR, then buy a SlingBox to remotely access the programming in other areas of the house, or on computers etc etc... that's what I did....
