basically only good for e-mail and maybe facebook

and other basic things for $60 a month? Besides if I want to check e-mail and facebook and that other basic stuff I can already do that on my smartphone. So what is the point of this?

How about online banking and shopping and other web activities that are better on a PC and not a smartphone?

If you want decent internet access, this can work. Just don't do online video. And you could do quite a bit of online video on the non-basic plans offered here.

I do less than 30GB/mo on Comcast and watch quite a bit of Netflix and Amazon Prime videos.

you can do all that stuff on a smartphone.

Doubtful you're "doing" quite a bit. 1 hour of Netflix is going to run you 1.5-2 GB. And that's you. Imagine a household of 3 or 4 people.

that's best quality you can dial the quality down to good and only use 300mb an hour, or better which is 700/hour I couldn't stand to watch it at the quality, but if you only have an old SDTV it's probably viable.

At 300mb an hour that would be 33 hours of video streaming

33 hours is 1 hour a day. Besides anything other than HD quality sucks. Most people won't be watching on an old SD TV. Sorry there is no way to justify this crappy service.

And how do you do that with multiple set top boxes that don't have wireless connectivity, or while you are out and everyone else in your home is, well, still at home. Pony up for a wireless ethernet bridge for even more money? Buy a second phone so everyone else in the house doesn't lose their connectivity when you leave the room? A mobile phone hot spot is hardly a convenient substitute for a fixed wired modem unless you are a recluse nor would it provide the same performance as an external antenna setup would.

You underestimate the ability to do stuff on a relatively slow connection. My parents' internet is 1.5x384 DSL (VZW is faster but more expensive and capped, even on Millenicom...and their usage is 30+ GB per month). On any given weekend there are times when four computers (laptops and a desktop) on in the house, browsing the web, checking e-mail, even watching YouTube and/or Netflix.

Don't get me wrong...I love my cable connection, but they can't get that there, and further out it's EvDO (or HSPA) only for decent data speeds. People still want to use a full-sized keyboard to surf the web, and some folks still don't have smartphones, so a megabit or two down and 384-700 kbps up works for them.
