Davesnothere posted :
Now that I have left Cogeco proper and taken my business to START Communications TPIA with service delivered thru Cogeco's new Ontario POI, I no longer need to lament what kind of usage meter that Cogeco has, nor how it behaves, regarding waiting sometimes 5 days between updates, even near the end of a billing period, nor worry about its accuracy.

Besides I now have a much more generous monthly cap and a lower fee for excess usage above that cap, so it is much less necessary to check any usage meters.

And Cogeco's silly email policies do not affect me any more, as START will communicate with me at the external email address of MY choice, just as it SHOULD be.

BUT, those of you who have stayed with Cogeco are still risking the same issues as I chose to avoid by making this change.

You would be well advised to read thoroughly the current thread, and the one about the 'Usage Based Billing (UBB) Nightmare', »[Burloak] Usage Based Billing Nightmare , as well as the one where Cogeco's CEO Audet says that he doesn't need certain customers »"Undesirable" customers: Cogeco, Audet

Oh yes, and how could I forget THIS thread - the one most near and dear to MY heart - the thread about Cogeco's ridiculous email policies and flawed Webmail client : »Why Cogeco Subscribers are NOT Notified

All of those are in the Cogeco forum.

Then you will be better able to decide what to do with your Internet budget, which, BTW, could stretch farther, as START's rates are lower.

I saved $15 plus HST per month by changing to START.

My Cogeco plan was 30/2 with a 175GB cap.

My Start plan is 16/1 with a 300GB cap.

Neither had contracts nor bundle discounts.

The cap was more important to me than the speed, and your needs may vary from mine.

Both plans need to use a Docsis 3 (D3) modem to work at their best during peak periods - aka minimal congestion.

Cogeco's network currently only approves one model of D3 modem, which is the Cisco DPC3000, with hardware revision 2.

My actual feed thru START is solid and reliable, just as the direct Cogeco feed had proven to be in our community.

That part of things was never an issue for me - Instead the Cogeco politics and policies were, and START runs things in a much more common sense manner, and with better communications from Customer Service.

However, it never hurts to save some money too.

Cheers ! :)

BTW, portions of this post may become part of a review or two.

--

We have only 2 things about which to worry :
(1) That things may never get back to normal
(2) That they already HAVE !
-
START Forum »Start Communications
Or you can still use Canadian Broadband.

Trist posted : Thanks for the heads-up on Bell. I did some research on their CS and read many useful user comments here and on other forums and ruled out not just Bell, but DSL. I may try the new cable reseller at some point but for now I am sticking with the devil I know.

I did call in and, last week, have a service call that took care of my issue which was surprising to me since it had all signs of being another congestion issue but was instead only the the modem. The technicians replaced it, trimmed and recapped some cable and all was well again. Better speed than I've ever had, in fact. Also, from the Tech I learned that the higher end packages are, and have been since last year, available to me.

I'm still on what was Standard and so I am upgrading, this Thursday, to the Ultimate 30 for an extra $9/monthly. I only once used over 80GB (since the jump from 60GB) so I'll be able to do much more online with less worry about the meter, which I still don't find updates up-to-date. It's a huge difference in cap, more than I can imagine using, but I'd rather pay the extra $9 than what what I paid last November when I did go well over, with no second warning ever being sent!! And I did find a small utility, as it seems everyone else has, that does a decent job monitoring correct usage from my main computer (my netbook sees little usage as it's for writing and browsing, and neither of my phones makes much of a dent) so I can monitor myself and remain well under the U30 package cap.

Hopefully Cogeco will work on a better monitoring process but with the exception of raising prices they have always been slow on everything internet related so not holding my breath.

anon posted : Seriously forget broken usage meters. What happened with trying to do away with usage billing or at least give us more value for what we pay for ? If you were a person invited to do Tera beta testing this month and GW2 beta testing guess how much usage you would use up with just those two downloads ? These usage limitations are ridiculous and they actually have stopped me from doing a 7 day trial of SWTOR. I think my next step is telling companies well I didn't try this game or download this program cuz of my internet providers usage caps and therefore you lose the opportunity to make money off me. If enough people complain and companies see a connection to it limiting their profits maybe they will do something about it.
