Whole Home PVR shortchanged by Rogers it seems

Who wants a Whole Home PVR with only 2 tuners? The Shaw Gateway has 6 tuners and the ability to watch 9 HD streams. The Shaw Gateway also has a DOCIS 3.0 modem (thereby eliminating the need for a separate modem for internet service) and firmware that allows Shaw to deliver many of the cool features that are being delivered by IPTV providers like Telus Optik and Bell Fibe.

WOW, looks like Rogers is not providing Ontario consumers with a great Whole Home PVR experience -- in fact we are being shortchanged big time in view of the above quote by a very knowledgeable person.

Referred source for the quote above Digital Home

It's Rogers, what did you expect. The Guide/UI has just NOW changed for the first time since Digital Cable first came out on the original Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 boxes in like 96-97.

This NextBox thing is inferior right off the bat, the interface is pretty, but SLOW. Also no way of adjusting the interface size to fit more info in the guide.

It does suck that Ontarians are getting shortchanged. I mean, the boxes have had the capability to do this for years and we're just getting it. Meanwhile in the States they've had whole home PVR for like what? 5-6 years already?

Shaw and Bell definitely have better tech in Canada but as a whole we still seem to be behind. We love to pay more for less in this country.

The Shaw Gateway is definitely impressive compared to the Cisco boxes Rogers is currently using. However the specs don't tell the entire story.

Specifically regarding to the higher number of tuners in the Gateway, it is a necessity. With the Cisco boxes, the WHPVR terminal devices (4642) are HD STBs with a tuner themselves. With the Shaw/Arris system, the Gateway is not a STB, but rather a server that handles the tuning for the entire WHPVR system. The Portal devices are terminals for the system only and does not function independently as a cable tuner.

Frankly I think the issues many are having with the new IPG interface is more an issue of poor implementation on Rogers part rather than an issue with the Cisco hardware.

What counts is the FLEXIBILITY and Capability of the Aris/Shaw system --- Comparatively The Rogers/CISCO Whole Home PVR system is a real disappointment.
