[NV] new modem - still having frequent disconnects

I had been having frequent disconnect with an older Motorola modem. After a friend upgraded to a new DOCIS 3.0 modem and noticed significant improvement in his connection, I decided to do the same. A trip to frys and I have a new SB6121 Motorola. It has improved the connection *some* but it is still dropping frequently.

I have talked with support before with the old modem and "everything looks good" was the response. Any suggestions of how to get it stable?

I'm just betting your issues would go away with a cisco DPC3010 modem.

i love how you think because some one has a moto modem its instantly a modem issue and the cisco will cure all that is just being naive, the fact is since the firmware update this past june they are no more prone to issue then cisco modem but one of the first thing you want to check along with the signal is the firmware for the moto's as the older firmware's were causing issues

just looking at the first page of topics and eliminating people who posted multiple times there are just about as many people having connections issue with the cisco, but keep in mind that since motos are sold retail and are bought by more people its only natural that you may see more topics but i can tell you first hand im on a 6120 and had connection issue prior to the update but since not one problem

Ill im trying to tell you is have a open mind, if signal levels are fine and firmware is up to date and tech visit have not solved the issue then maybe that person should try a new modem or cisco but it seem you prefer to shoot first and ask question later approach

and being he said he had a older modem before and was having issue its more likely a signal or noise issue some where

It is my understanding that the signal levels of the bonded downstream channels need to be within 2 dB of each other; the 4th channel (1 dBmv) is somewhat lower than the other three (5 or 6 dBmv). This will probably require a tech visit to correct.

As daveinpoway stated, your highest channel is too far off from the others, and it's your highest frequency channel. Do you have any old splitters or the like between the modem and the wall? (Old splitters were only "good" up to 860Mhz (or less, depending on if its REALLY ancient :/))

if your going to get new splitter get one that is rated 5Mhz-1000Mhz(1Ghz) and look for a number on the out put legs there should be a number either 3.5db or 7 db you want the 3.5db variety

Go to your cox walkin and ask for one or if a tech is coming out, get one from him/her.

those wal*mart, best buy, radio shack splitters are garbage.
make sure you don't have any unused legs on your splitter(s), that could let noise in.

The solution to unused splitter ports is to install a terminator (such as: »www.smarthome.com/7808/7 ··· k/p.aspx ) on each one. These can be found locally at Home Depot and other places; I'm not sure if the Cox stores also have them.

I haven't had a chance to go track down a new splitter, but I took a look at the one that is in place right now. It is one of those red ones that cox tech's install (1ghz with 3.5 outputs). I decided to switch the TV output with the one the modem was hooked up to. So far the modem levels seem better, and I have had no reboots in a day (which is much longer than in the past) My levels now:

I am going to replace the splitter even though that change doesn't appear to have impacted HD tv quality. I'm guessing maybe the splitter is going bad....or?

You look a fair bit better now (your biggest swing is 2.8dBmV which is still a little much but a lot better than the 5.something you had before, and it's not your highest channel any more). Definitely replace that splitter.
