Grants Pass, OR | I wouldn't recommend using any "green" drive(s) in a raid setup. Being green means that they could spin down at awkward times and not both at the same time, so your raid could very well break down quite often. |

I'd rather have a single WD Caviar black than any RAID based on Seagate (Maxtor) drives. There are TONS of these on Woot as refurbs all the time...

"Green" drives in general don't work well in RAID. Western Digital Green series drives are even worse, given the way they handle power. (but I love them for raw storage) |

Use 2 WD Black drives for the raid and use the green drive to backup your data to, frequently. Raid 1 is nice but it still doesn't protect you from a drive controller failure. While it is rare, it is possible for a bad controller to happily write corrupt data to both drives in a Raid 1. You typically don't notice until a lot of data has been rendered useless. |
