gkandra join:2004-02-19 Bay Village, OH | WOW phone I'm interesting in getting the triple package (cable, phone and internet). I'm going to port my existing number. How does the installation go for the phone portion at my house? i.e. how will the dial tone go from the phone modem to all the jacks in my house? do they do something with the phone box on the outside of my house? |

All you need to do is plug the modem into one phone port in the house, and disconnect the phone line coming from outside, and all phone jacks in the house will be activated automatically. |

gkandra join:2004-02-19 Bay Village, OH | Thanks Dan. One more quick question, is there an option to set my cell phone as a backup in case my phone modem is down (i.e. extended power outage, etc)? meaning if my phone modem is down, then the call would forward to my cell phone instead. |

There's no way to set it specifically as a backup, but if the power does go out, while the modem is on batter power, you could set call forwarding to your cell, and that way if the battery does run out, your calls will continue to go to your cell. -- Dan Della Terza WOW! | reply to gkandra when the Tech installs your EMTA they normally will deactivate your house from the outside line for you. If the line is EVER plugged back in- it can blow your EMTA. The Bell box should be tagged as DO NOT PLUG in line. |

The demarc you refer to is the phone company's demarc, not the cable demarc. The cable demarc is the house box. Since it's all coaxial up to the modem, and most people want their modems near their computer, you would just tie the modem into the closest phone line, and disconnect it from the old land line so that it doesn't back-feed into them.
The only situations where the techs typically tie the modem into the demarc would be if you had an alarm system that goes over the phone line. You typically want the alarm system to come before all other phone lines, so the tech would run a new line from the modem to the old demarc and tie the modem in there, as that would be wired directly to the alarm panel. Otherwise it makes no difference which outlet the modem is attached to. -- Dan Della Terza WOW! Internet, Cable & Phone Network Operations Center |
