 | Ultra TV wirless problems - How bad is it? I've been contemplating upgrading to Ultra TV but have been seeing a lot of complaints about the wireless range. How bad is it? |
|
 | Plug your own router (lan port, not internet port) into the UltraTV gateway and make sure your router's DHCP is turned off and make sure they both use the same IP scheme. Your router is now an access point and the gateway's wireless is turned off.
UltraTV is leaps and bounds ahead of the previous cable recievers and nothing should hold you back from upgrading, trust me!
I've had Ultra for a couple weeks and i'm loving it. |

If you aren't using a 3rd party firmware, I suspect that there might be a multitude of different ways to get your wireless router to behave only as a wireless access point (disabling nat routing and dhcp functions). Here is how to do it with dd-wrt:

 | It can only do nat if you use the internet port, all devices point to the UltraTV modem for gateway anyways, I don't know what's so difficult about this concent? |
|
 | reply to pargoff I don't use the gateways wireless. I had the installer turn it off.
I connected the gateway to my wireless router. Everything works as it did when I just had a cable modem.
MY internal network is totally isolated from the wow equipment and network.
The only issue is if I want to setup my server as a DNLA server I will have to add a second network card to that machine to connect it directly to the gateway. |

So far I am under the impression that you get exactly one public ip address. All devices that access the internet through the ultra tv gateway (I prefer to call it a router) will share this ip address when accessing the internet. If you have figured out a way to get wow to give you two public ip addresses (I have heard this is possible with a regular modem) then say so. Otherwise no amount of screwing around with anything changes the fact that at some point the ultra tv gateway is doing nat translation for traffic that is destined to/from the internet. |

 | Mix, at no point were we talking about getting different WAN IPs, I was making a recommendation to use an existing router for just the switch/access point. |
|
 | reply to Burbsguy So the gateway's wireless turns off if you connect an access point to it? I was really hoping it would stay on so I could have the gateway at one end of my house and hardwire my router acting as an access point to the other end of the house so I would have great coverage.
Can anyone confirm if this can be done? |

Can anyone confirm if this can be done? I am doing exactly this. Gateway in the basement, and wireless router as an access point at the other end on the first floor - both with wireless turned on. Two different SSIDs, but great coverage everywhere in the house.

 | Thanks Gary! Thats exactly what I wanted to know! Can't wait to get everything installed today!!! |

 | reply to pargoff It is terrible. You're better off using an aftermarket wireless router and configuring it to do the wireless connection handling. Just wish WOW admitted this and provided documentation to use your own wireless router. |
|
 | Its not hard to get it to work.
When UTV was installed we took the line that went from the old cable modem to my router and connected it to the gateway. Rebooted my router and everything worked no changes. |

I thought my DGL-4500 was bad but man is the Arris really bad! I can be in the same room as the gateway and watch my wireless bounce up and down dramatically. I have it setup for 802.11N only on channel 1, which no one else close to me is using. I can't stream Netflix to my blu ray player 80 feet away, but it's still amazing system overall. Just don't count on using the wireless portion. The more I think about it, we should get a discount for having to use our own wireless equipment on this "all in one" system. |

 | i have a wireless router that is working well right now. is it difficult to configure the network to use my own router? |
|
 | WOW_Dan, does WOW have an official response to these issues? |

We now get wireless strong thruout our 2 story house and back patio |
